Therefore, having anusaya (ཕྲ་རྒྱས་དང་བཅས་པ་, Sanskrit: sānusaya) means having the meaning of subsequent connection. The subsequent connection of attachment to desire is called the word anusaya. Moreover, subsequent connection also exists in accordance with the arising of other afflictions. Alternatively, anusaya itself is the subsequent application. Abandoning having anusaya also means not applying that affliction subsequently. Alternatively, the word anusaya appearing in the sutras is a designation close to attainment, so-called existing in designation is the designator. Then, to what is it designated? Therefore, it is said to be designated to attainment. The actual meaning of the word anusaya is universal entanglement. In terms of designation, it refers to attainment, because it is the cause of anusaya. For example, fire is the cause of painful feeling, so it is called pain, similar to this. In the Dharma Abhidhamma, the appearance of the word anusaya means that only afflictions are the nature, so-called existing in nature, or playing with nature, is nature. Then, in what does nature exist? Therefore, it is said that only afflictions. Because it grows in the way of having objects and being correspondingly equipped, therefore, anusayas are all correspondingly equipped. For this meaning, there is a verse as an example: Because the mind has no afflictions, because of obstruction, because of opposition to virtue, and because virtue also depends on objects, here there is no anusaya. The explanation of this verse is: Because anusayas make the mind afflicted, so it is not correspondingly equipped, it is impossible to make the mind afflicted. The explanation of the word obstruction is: not arising previously non-existent virtue. Because the mind with anusaya does not arise previously non-existent virtue. The explanation of the word opposing virtue is: even the virtue that has already arisen will completely degenerate. Anusayas are opposed to virtue, because virtue

Because of completely falling away from what has arisen, subtle latent tendencies are contrary to virtuous qualities. Therefore, the statement "not associated" is because without these in the mind, afflictions and so on, as mentioned before, are impossible. Similarly, if associated (with afflictions), then all of this is permissible. However, if non-associated (latent tendencies) also act in this way, then it means that non-associated (latent tendencies) would also make the mind afflicted, unarisen virtuous qualities would not arise, and there would also be complete falling away from what has arisen. If this were the case, then these non-associated (latent tendencies), because they are always near, virtuous qualities would also not become objects of focus. Just like this, these non-associated (latent tendencies) exist in the state of affliction and in other states as well. Virtuous qualities are objects of focus, and are also objects of focus. Therefore, because virtuous qualities are also objects of focus, here: subtle latent tendencies are not non-associated. Such a statement is established. The teacher says that the Sarvastivadins say: the mind is the maker of afflictions, etc., these statements are not valid reasons. Whoever thinks that subtle latent tendencies are non-associated is the Sthavira Nikaya. This all refers to mental afflictions, etc. To think that it is only made by afflictions is a synonym for saying that it is only made by pervasive actions. Pervasive actions are not always near, so virtuous qualities becoming objects of focus is established. If one fully understands the subtle latent tendencies of desire, there is no contradiction with the sutra "abandon together with subtle latent tendencies." However, if it becomes that subtle latent tendencies are non-associated, therefore it is said that subtle latent tendencies are neither associated nor non-associated. Why is that? Because they are not other substances. It is said that the seed of the essence of potential is not something other than desire, etc. The body is produced from the afflictions of the basis, produced by previously produced afflictions, is the power of producing afflictions, is the power of producing afflictions. For example, decay.
