In general, in the world, what is called letters and so on is said like this: What is called "together with arising" refers to the collection of mind and mental factors, that is, what causes the action of the body to arise. The action of the body, together with arising, which is fully grasped by reason, is letters and seals. Volume thirty-eight. Because the result is established on the cause, in the treatise, the action of the body is writing letters and carving seals, so it is considered to be letters and seals, but it is not like what is said in the world, because in the world, letters are the symbols of letters that exist on books and so on. Seals are symbols of letters and non-letters, this is what people think. Counting and poetry are the action of speech, together with arising, which is fully grasped by reason, it should be understood like this. What is called "the nature of the five aggregates" refers to the form aggregate of letters and seals, etc., which is the action of the body. The form aggregate of counting and poetry, etc., is the action of speech. For both, because there are the four aggregates of feeling, etc., which arise together, they are the nature of the five aggregates. What is called "what is it that summarizes the laws of the mind" refers to the numbers such as one, two, three, etc. Some Dharmalakṣaṇavādins say, or it refers to what is counted by the mind. This number is also grasped together with its retinue, so it is the nature of the four aggregates. While explaining the nature of letters and so on, the nature of the categories of dharmas such as together with faults, etc., is also established together. The other connection is that these terms are explained in the explanation of the Dharma aggregate, and this is its abbreviation, so these terms are established. Because it arises together with the nature of afflictions, it is together with faults. Because it is covered by afflictions, it is obscured, and afflictions are also obscured by other corresponding afflictions. Because it is dark, or because it is abandoned by the noble ones, it is evil, darkness refers to being internal in a way that has afflictions.

It should be abandoned. The so-called "immaculate virtue" refers to those virtues without outflows, because they have reached the ultimate purity, so they are supreme. What is different from evil and supreme is considered "intermediate." The reason for saying this is to clarify that only afflictions are evil, and only immaculate virtue is supreme. Other than that, it is neither evil nor supreme, so it is intermediate. The so-called "conditioned virtue should be cultivated" means that whether it is virtue with outflows or without outflows, it should be cultivated without any difference, and respected by generating it in the continuum. The so-called "the rest should not be cultivated," then what is the rest? It is unconditioned phenomena, non-virtuous phenomena, and any phenomena with afflictions, which is the so-called "obscured and unspecified." The reason for saying "should not be habituated" is because it should not be practiced repeatedly. Others say it is because it should not be generated. The reason for saying "there is no result" is because conditioned phenomena have cause and effect, while unconditioned phenomena do not. The so-called "having a superior" means having a supreme one. Non-virtuous phenomena are possessed by obscured and unspecified phenomena, because obscured and unspecified phenomena do not have unpleasant Vipaka results. Obscured and unspecified phenomena are possessed by conditioned, non-obscured, and unspecified phenomena, because they are not afflictive. These phenomena are also possessed by virtuous phenomena with outflows, because the result of virtuous phenomena with outflows is pleasant. These phenomena are also possessed by uncontaminated phenomena, because there are no afflictions. Uncontaminated conditioned phenomena are also possessed by unconditioned phenomena, because unconditioned phenomena are permanent. Unconditioned phenomena such as space and analytical cessation, therefore analytical cessation is also possessed by analytical cessation, because analytical cessation is a permanent virtue.
