In the past, (the Buddha) said to the monks: You should expel (those who are corrupt) from the monastic community that upholds discipline. The so-called "abandoning the one without essence" refers to the empty grains within the grain. Similarly, a monk who only has the appearance but lacks the essence of discipline should also be abandoned and expelled. The so-called "victorious through the path" refers to those who are still learning and those who have completed their learning. The guide is the Buddha. Seeking life for the sake of the path refers to the monks who uphold discipline, they live for the sake of the path. The one who denigrates the path refers to the one who breaks the precepts. The example given here is as follows: The so-called "rotten wood," broadly speaking, although it is not a tree, it retains the shape of the previous tree, so it is called rotten wood. A dried-up lake is still called a lake, and things made in the shape of a parrot's beak in the house of a craftsman, because its shape is similar to the beak of a parrot, it is called a parrot's beak. Similarly, here it is only the general shape of a monk that remains, so it is called a practitioner. A rotten seed cannot germinate, although it cannot be said to be a seed, but because the shape of the seed remains, it is still called a seed. A fire wheel is also called a wheel because it is similar to a wheel. Just like a dead being, although only the body of the being remains, it is still called a being, so it should be regarded in the same way (as a precept-breaker). The so-called "giving training" refers to a monk who, because of intense desire, engages in impure conduct with a woman, and only because he is afraid of being discovered, without any remorse in his heart, runs to the monastic community of monks to confess that he has committed a crime. Then, the noble monastic community orders that all monks must treat him as if he were a newly ordained person, and punish him, this is the so-called "giving training." If one completely loses the qualification of a monk because of breaking the precepts, then (this punishment) would be meaningless, because he cannot take the full ordination again, nor can he become a monk again.
