Indeed, it should be said that (discipline) can be obtained merely through manifestation rather than present sentient beings. The meaning of this statement is that (discipline) is considered to be possessed only by present sentient beings. The reason for saying "therefore" is that in order for these disciplines to be obtained as previously described, they must be divided into four situations. The meaning of "in detail" is: From which paths can one obtain meditative and non-leaking disciplines, and there are also aggregates, realms, and sources that are not individual liberation disciplines; from which paths can one obtain individual liberation disciplines, and there are also those that are not meditative and non-leaking disciplines; from which paths can one obtain both, and from which paths can neither be obtained. The first situation is the individual liberation discipline obtained from the actions and conclusions of present killing and other paths of action, as well as the prescribed transgressions such as cutting down trees, because the scriptures say, "All desire realm realizations are related to both." The second situation is the discipline obtained from abandoning killing and other seven actions of body and speech in the actual paths of action of the past and future. Since it arises from the actual and all times, it is a meditative and non-leaking discipline, but not an individual liberation discipline, because it is past and future. The third situation is obtained from the actual paths of action occurring in the present. Since it is a path of action occurring in the present, it is also an individual liberation discipline, and since it is the actual action of the path of action, it is also a meditative and non-leaking discipline. The fourth situation is obtained from the proximate and conclusions of the past and future. Since it is past and future, it is not an individual liberation discipline, and since it is proximate and conclusion, it is also not a meditative and non-leaking discipline. The Acharya (teacher) sees that in his own continuum, the present path of action cannot obtain discipline through language, so when obtaining discipline, since there is no present path of action, it should be said, "Obtained from the present based path of action," this is to explain and teach.

Because retreating from anything, it is impossible to become the present day. To those of the past and present, it is said, "not." The Ācārya's thought is that these have already happened, so they are not suitable for guarding either. Those that are happening now cannot be prevented from arising, but there is ability for those of the future, so it is thought that only those are suitable for guarding. As it is said, the thought of the Vibhajyavāda is evident to be like this: the vow of individual liberation, as well as the actual conduct and the ultimate, are in order, for the vows of killing and so on, the actual conduct and the ultimate, vowing not to enter these. In reality, those that are antidotal arise like creating obstacles for those that are incompatible. The vow also says to the vow: you are guarded, do not appear. Similarly, for entering, it is also said to entering in this way, up to "between" should be connected. Similarly, when the vows of the present aggregates, realms, sources, and paths of action, as well as the nature of the actual conduct and the ultimate cease, it is said that the individual liberation vow is obtained from those of the present, therefore it should not be said that way. Some think that it is obtained from everything, which is said extensively, the bhikkhu's vow is obtained from all paths of action, because it is abandoning all paths of action. Some think that it is from four, other than those, meaning that the vows other than the bhikkhu's vow, the vows of śrāmaṇera and so on, are obtained only from four branches, namely the three of bodily killing and so on, and the false speech of language. If it is thought that non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance are its cause, it means that the cause of the vow is thought to be two kinds, namely non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance, and small, medium, and large minds. If it is thought that the first case is, then the vow is obtained through all paths of action of the nature of non-attachment and so on, because the universally arising mind is virtuous.
