We are told in the Sutra of Delight that grain-brewed liquor and mixed liquor are frequented and habituated in all places of heedlessness, and that doing so many times leads to the destruction of the body and rebirth in hell. Therefore, it is said that drinking alcohol very commonly leads to bad destinies, which is incidental. At the same time as drinking alcohol, the habits of non-virtue repeatedly and constantly continue. Because the habits of non-virtue continue, they produce the karma of bad destinies, that is, the karma with the fruit of bad destinies, and the karma that did not exist before increases and universally increases, or obtains the opportunity to continue. At the time of death, it is the time when the previously accumulated karma is to produce its fruit, and it obtains the opportunity to continue. Because it obtains the opportunity to increase or continue, it is said that it will fall into bad destinies. This is how it should be understood. The so-called "drink produced from food" is made from rice porridge. The so-called "drink mixed from substances" is made from sugarcane juice and the like. These also, broadly speaking, grain-brewed liquor and mixed liquor, sometimes do not become intoxicating things, that is, when they are young. Sometimes they excessively become intoxicating things, that is, when they are very old. Therefore, it is said to be intoxicating. If it is intoxicating, therefore it is a fault, this is what is thought. The so-called "barley, yogurt, and buckwheat, etc.," the word "etc." also includes grains, such as millet, etc. Because it is not grain-brewed liquor and mixed liquor, even if it becomes intoxicating, there is no fault. If one drinks the liquor that is the essence of grain-brewed liquor and mixed liquor, therefore it is a fault, this is the concluding statement. The so-called "because it has become the place of all heedlessness," drinking alcohol is the place of all heedlessness, that is, it becomes the cause of non-virtuous deeds such as killing, and it is the place, basis, and support of all loss of mindfulness, therefore it is the place of heedlessness. The so-called "from where does one obtain one," that is, in relation to the exposition of objects and sentient and non-sentient beings, from where does one obtain the Pratimoksha vows, and from there can one obtain the remaining Samadhi and Anasrava vows? This is the meaning. From the preparatory action, the main action, and the concluding action...

Actions are the preparation, the actual deed, and the conclusion of non-virtuous actions. From these, in sequence, arise the antidotes, known as the Pratimoksha vows, which are the three natures of preparation, the actual deed, and the conclusion of both revealing and non-revealing actions. The basis for indicating sentient and non-sentient beings is the characteristics and nature of living beings and forests, along with the faults of killing and destroying forests, and so on. Therefore, both of these are dependent on both. Naturally faulty actions are dependent on both sentient and non-sentient beings, and prohibited actions are also dependent on both sentient and non-sentient beings. Thus, the statement that naturally faulty actions are dependent on sentient beings, while prohibited actions are dependent on non-sentient beings, is untenable. For example, naturally faulty actions dependent on sentient beings include killing living beings. Prohibited actions dependent on sentient beings include monks touching a woman's hand, and sleeping together in a house. Naturally faulty actions dependent on non-sentient beings include stealing gold. Prohibited actions dependent on non-sentient beings include monks cutting tree leaves, and the Vinaya's explanation of offenses related to food. The phrase "because of entering the basis of sentient beings" means that it is thought to be because of entering the basis that is designated as sentient beings. Only present phenomena are the basis for designating sentient beings; the past and future are not, because they are like non-existence. For that very reason, it is not from the past and future, because they are not counted as sentient beings. Because it arises from indicating sentient and non-sentient beings, if one enters the basis designated as non-sentient, wouldn't it become a Pratimoksha vow? The answer is that it is not meant to prevent such a statement. How can it be said that it is only obtained from indicating present sentient beings?
