Thus it was said. Having said thus, it is shown that the person who is spoken of is only speakable, not unspeakable. Like sound and so on, it means that the person is not perceived by eye consciousness, because it is not a condition for its object, like sound. The word "and so on" here means like smell. Like taste and so on, similarly, it should be said that this ear consciousness and so on are imperceptible, this is the thesis. This close taking means that it should be understood as stating the fault of contradicting the distinction of the subject of the proposition. "Relying on two" means that it is said to rely on two, but it is not said to arise relying on three, so this contradicts the sutra. "Bhikkhu, the cause for the arising of eye consciousness is the eye" means that in the extensive explanation, the near condition is the cause, and the distant one is only the condition. Some say that the one that causes is the cause, and the condition is only the object. Some say that these two are different names. The thesis that the person is different from form should be established, because it is cognized by ear consciousness, like sound. Similarly, the thesis that the person is different from sound should be established, because it is the object of eye consciousness, like form. Similarly, it should be combined with the others as well, meaning that the thesis that the person is different from form and sound should be established, because it is cognized by nose consciousness, like smell, this is the thesis of combination. Because it is the respective field of activity and the enjoyment of the object, it is said that the person is not the enjoyer. "The mind faculty is the basis of these" is said incidentally, it is not an example of this. Although it is so, "the mind is the basis of these faculties" means that the faculties and so on that rely on it are the cause of the arising of consciousness.

Also correct. Or, if it is thought that the individual will become a non-object, then the Sutra Pitaka should be taken as the standard. Then what will happen? If it is said that it is not an object, then it means that if it is not any object, then it will not be the knowable. Therefore, the so-called five kinds will contradict one's own tenets. If, as stated in the Sutra Pitaka, others do not experience the behavior and objects of others, then if the five faculties such as the eye are taken as the standard, one's own object will not be confused. Even if one's own object is not confused, the individual will not be known by eye consciousness and so on. In this way, the mind faculty will also not be confused, because the Sutra Pitaka says in detail that these six faculties have different behaviors. Some people drop the knots from the monkey onwards, between the six creatures, dogs, birds, foxes, crocodiles, child-killing Rakshasas, snakes and monkeys, and those dropped are in villages, the sky, cemeteries, water, stone caves and forests, because they want their own behavior and objects, similarly, these six faculties also want their own behavior and objects, here is just an example. If, despite the existence of the Sutra text, the mind faculty is still confused, then the faculties such as the eye will also be confused. If confused, will the individual be known by eye consciousness and so on? Here it is said in detail that it is not said that the faculty itself is the faculty. Just like the Sutra text of the six creatures, it is not said that the faculties such as the eye themselves are the faculties. Why? Because it is impossible for the five faculties such as the eye to be considered as seeing and so on. For example, it is impossible to think of these as seeing and hearing, because they are the nature of form. Those called consciousness, it is also impossible to think of eye consciousness and so on as seeing and so on. Why is it impossible to think of these as seeing and hearing?

English

That is because there is no conceptualization. The mental consciousness that is led by the power of those is said to be a sense faculty, because it is similar to a sense faculty. How is it known that it is led by the power of those? If the eye consciousness and so on are not produced from the gate of the eye and the ear, etc., how else could that conceptual mental consciousness arise? Therefore, knowing that it is led by the power of those, the mental consciousness, like the eye sense faculty and so on, experiences its own objects and realms, and desires forms and so on. What is the mental consciousness that is led solely by the mental sense faculty, which appears extensively, is that which is led by the mental sense faculty does not desire objects other than the eye and so on. What then? It only focuses on its own object, the dharma-sphere. Therefore, if that is the case, the mental sense faculty will also become free from error, and there is no fault in saying that. What does it mean that it is not a person? It is to be directly perceived and fully known. Therefore, this person is also not to be known, but in reality it is said that this is not to be directly perceived and fully known, is it not said that it is not the object of consciousness? Therefore, it is said that wisdom and consciousness are the same because they have the same object. The eye and so on are also objects of consciousness, but not only objects of direct perception. "Without self" means by the eye, it means by the eye consciousness. It is said to rely on the sutra of definitive meaning, that is, monks, these four are the reliance. What are the four? Relying on the Dharma and not on the person, relying on the meaning and not on the words, relying on the sutra of definitive meaning and not on the provisional meaning, relying on wisdom and not on consciousness, this is how it appears. To fall into imputation is merely to have a self for the purpose of establishing a name.
