It says, "It is so for explanation, but not for others." If asked, how is the third liberation explained as being directly realized? The answer is: It is stated in the sutra that one abides, having directly realized the ugly liberation with the body and having perfected it. The eighth liberation is also the same, as it is stated in the sutra that one abides, having directly realized the cessation of perception and feeling with the body and having perfected it. Among these, the word "directly realized" is synonymous with "having directly realized." "Abiding in perfection" means abiding in those samadhis. If someone asks: The answer is: Here it is said that because the third liberation, through the means of transformation, abandons all the obscurations of the liberation of form, it is more important than the first and second liberations, so it is said that the third liberation is directly realized. Similarly, the eighth liberation, through the means of transformation, abandons all the obscurations of the formless liberation, so it is more important, so it is said to be directly realized. The reason for saying "being situated at the edge of the realm and the earth" is that the fourth dhyana is situated at the edge of the form realm and the earth, and the peak of existence is also situated at the edge of the formless realm and the earth. Similarly, "with the great ones" means that because one perceives the inner as form, one observes the outer great forms, i.e., good colors and bad colors, etc., up to "this is the second of the all-surpassing spheres." Similarly, if asked, how is "not perceiving the inner as form" understood? The answer is: Because one does not perceive the inner as form, one observes the outer small forms, i.e., good colors and bad colors, etc., up to "this is the third of the all-surpassing spheres," as before. Similarly, because one does not perceive the inner as form, one observes the outer great forms, i.e., good colors and bad colors, etc., up to "this is the fourth of the all-surpassing spheres," as before. Like this, these four and "merely contemplating the formless, i.e., blue, yellow, red, and white," etc. If asked, how is it understood? The answer is: Because one does not perceive the inner as form, the outer blue, the color is blue, appearing like blue, the light

For example, blue appears like the flower of a zarma, or the silk of Varanasi, perfectly presenting blue, the color is blue, is blue. Looking at things like the appearance of blue light, knowing by subduing these forms and colors, seeing by subduing. When such cognition arises, this is the fifth source of subjugation. Perceiving internally as formless, looking at the external yellow form, appearing as yellow, the color is yellow, is yellow, like the flower of a dongka, or the silk of Varanasi, perfectly presenting yellow, the color is yellow, is yellow, looking at things like the appearance of yellow light, from "looking" onwards, until the detailed explanation "this is the sixth source of subjugation." Perceiving internally as formless, looking at the external red form, appearing as red, the color is red, is red, like the flower of bandhujivaka, or the silk of Varanasi, perfectly presenting red, the color is red, is red, looking at things like the appearance of red light, from "looking" onwards, until the detailed explanation "this is the seventh source of subjugation." Perceiving internally as formless, looking at the external white form, appearing as white, the color is white, is white, like the morning star, or the silk of Varanasi, perfectly presenting white, the color is white, is white. Looking at things like the appearance of white light, from "looking" onwards, until the detailed explanation "this is the eighth source of subjugation." The previous four and this one are the same, thus becoming eight. The saying "the two are like the first liberation" is like the first liberation "those with form contemplate forms," just as one looks at the form one possesses and looks at external forms, the first sources of subjugation are also similar to that. One of these two is looking at the form one possesses and looking at the form that exists externally, like this, from "perceiving internally as having form, looking at the external small form" onwards, the detailed explanation arises. The second is also the same as this, the difference being the contemplation of the external large forms.
