Because it is not free from the weariness arising from the lower level (of meditation), it does not possess joy and happiness, and therefore it also possesses equanimity. Because it is the path of detachment from desire, it does not possess the taste of feeling. If it possessed the taste of feeling, it would not be the path of detachment from desire, because the path that possesses attachment cannot eliminate afflictions. Or connect it this way: Because it must be diligently upright, it also possesses equanimity. Because it is not free from the weariness arising from the lower level (of meditation), and because it is the path of detachment from desire, these two reasons lead to not possessing the taste of feeling. The rest is stated as before. The sutra says, "The mind of the proximate concentration that connects to rebirth is defiled," which means that even in the four dhyanas and four formless absorptions, whichever proximate concentration connects to rebirth, it is with a defiled mind that is not in accordance with that proximate concentration, this is the tenet. Therefore, the sutra elaborately says, "The mind of the proximate concentration that connects to rebirth is defiled." The sutra says, "Unimpeded liberation is also considered to be in accordance with the taste of feeling," which means that in order to exclude unimpeded liberation, it is thought: Since unimpeded liberation may also be without outflows, it may also be in accordance with the taste of feeling. The venerable Sangharakshita said: Because of focusing on the main practice, there is the samadhi of tasting. The sutra says, "Because it is the distinction of dhyana," which means that the main practice of the first dhyana itself, because it is free from investigation, becomes particularly excellent, this is called the term of excellent dhyana. The sutra says, "Because there is no distinction," which means that just as the first dhyana has distinctions, some have investigation and analysis, some only have analysis, while the second dhyana and so on do not have these distinctions, therefore the second dhyana and so on do not establish excellent dhyana. The sutra says, "Because these two paths are difficult," which means because there is manifest fabrication.

It is precisely because the ground is upright. The reason for saying "merely blocking conceptualization" is because it is said, "distinctive samadhi without conceptualization." The reason for saying "the samadhi that focuses on that is the samadhi without characteristics" is because it arises from the absence of characteristics, hence it is without characteristics. The reason for saying "it is ten aspects" refers to the aspects of impermanence and suffering, which are two, and the four aspects of the origin (of suffering), and the four aspects of the path. These are the ten aspects. The reason for saying "because of aversion to impermanence, suffering, and their causes" is because of aversion to impermanence, suffering, and their cause, which is the origin of suffering. If asked, what is it? It is the absence of aspiration, meaning not creating samsara. Moreover, the path must also be abandoned like a raft, so it is called a raft, a raft! Because this is similar to that, the path is like a raft. Its nature is just like that, because the path is like a raft, it must be abandoned. Therefore, this is spoken in terms of non-aspiration. For example, relying on a raft to cross a river, because that raft must be abandoned, one does not cling to the raft and stay there. Similarly, relying on the path to cross, also because that path must be abandoned, one does not cling to the path and stay there. The phrase "having its aspects" refers to having the ten aspects as previously explained. The reason for saying "to manifest turning away from that" is because it manifests turning away from that path, which shows that that path must be abandoned. The phrase "manifesting turning away from impermanence, suffering, and their causes" should be understood even if it is not explicitly stated. The phrase "emptiness and selflessness do not cause aversion" means that the yogi does not become averse to the aspects of emptiness and selflessness. Although one focuses on the aspects of emptiness and selflessness in the truth of suffering, they do not cause one to become averse to suffering. Why is that? Because they are similar to nirvana, emptiness and selflessness are...

Because of the nature of all things, Nirvana is also the nature of emptiness and selflessness, therefore, they will not be tired of Nirvana either. Therefore, the desireless samadhi is not their aspect. Worldly beings exist in eleven grounds, namely the desire realm, the realm of nothingness, special samadhi, samadhi, and the formless realm. Wherever there is a path, it exists, namely the desire realm and the peak of existence, and all the grounds except for the near-division grounds such as the second dhyana. Because it is the gate of liberation, it is said that the meaning of the gate is the meaning of the gate. Because it is based on emptiness and so on, it is said that because it is based on emptiness and desirelessness and signlessness, it is called emptiness emptiness, desirelessness desirelessness, signlessness.
