Furthermore, why isn't mental ease referred to as happiness? The reason is that this joy is not nearly pacified. Therefore, even when the mind is placed in equanimity, it is established as being like distraction, like arrogance, together with joy, together with laughter, and like fluttering about. When it becomes nearly pacified, if another ground is attained at that time, the feeling of that kind is called happiness. The statement "because it is not separated from afflictions" means that it is a synonym for not being liberated from the afflictions of that ground. The statement "because it is disturbed by afflictions" is a synonym for not being thoroughly subdued by afflictions. The statement "because it is completely deluded by the happiness of having afflictions" means that because it is deluded by the happiness of having afflictions, there is no mindfulness and awareness. The statement "because it is defiled by afflictions" means that because it is defiled by the afflictions of that ground, there is no equanimity and complete mindfulness. The statement "these two are because they are of the many virtuous grounds" means that extreme pliancy and equanimity arise from the many virtuous grounds, namely: Faith and Non-carelessness, extreme pliancy. Equanimity, shame, knowing shame are also present. The two roots, non-harming and diligence, always arise from virtue. As it is said. Furthermore, according to the previous explanation, do those who have afflicted meditative states also have those? The answer is no. Why isn't it said that way? Because it can be established without saying it. Others say that because extreme pliancy and equanimity of the many virtuous grounds are not mentioned, they are only present. The statement "breath and so forth" refers to exhalation and inhalation, etc. Because it is extremely shown as two, it is shown here as a word of two. Others say that the statement "because it is not disturbed by investigation and analysis, joy and happiness" means that the first three meditative states are disturbed by investigation and so forth. The first meditative state is disturbed by investigation and analysis, the second is disturbed by joy, and the third is disturbed by happiness. Thus, the fourth meditative state is not disturbed by them because it is separated from the eight faults.

Furthermore, the sutra says, "It is like a lamp without wind, which is not moved by the wind." That which is called "first category" is included in the first dhyana. That which is called "like a mind of emanation" is like the emanation of that place, whoever desires to emanate as an emanation, whoever manifests the mind of emanation of the lower ground, is the same as that. That which is called "because of inferiority, it is also not good" is that the good of the first dhyana ground is inferior and lower than that of the second dhyana ground, therefore it does not manifest. Because of intention, they manifest the first dhyana ground, not with respect. If that good has a different maturation, then they do not aim at its different maturation, therefore they do not strive to manifest the good mind. "Free from desire, from birth" means free from desire. The word "ya" in "by birth, ya" is an implicit indication. Those who do not conform to this, namely, those who are free from desire from the lower ground, attain the purity of dhyana or formlessness. Those who are free from desire from desire, except for those who are in accordance with the definitive part, attain the first three kinds of purity. Likewise, from the birth of nothingness, up to the attainment of the peak of existence. That which is called "except for the peak of existence" is attained only by being free from desire from the lower ground. That which is called "from the birth of the lower ground" is attained when one is born from the upper ground to the lower ground. Furthermore, "from application, also in accordance with the definitive part" means that its attainment is not done by detachment from desire and birth. Furthermore, "from degeneration, also in accordance with the part of degeneration" means that when one degenerates from that which is in accordance with the part of abiding, one attains that which is in accordance with the part of degeneration. That which is called "because of that" is because of what reason, even from degeneration, one attains that which is in accordance with the part of degeneration. Likewise, loss and birth, what is obtained and abandoned, should also be combined. How is it? If it is said that the pure one is obtained from degeneration, is there abandonment from degeneration? It is said: Yes. If it is said that the pure one is obtained from birth, is there abandonment from birth?
