When the mind is coarse, there is no subtlety; when it is subtle, there is no coarseness, because they are contradictory, so investigation and analysis are not simultaneous. Saying "because faults are mentioned" means that if coarseness and subtlety depend on the difference of ground and aspect, then there would be investigation and analysis up to the peak of existence and so on. Some read "because faults are not mentioned," which means that no faults are mentioned for not encountering. Saying "having abandoned two, three, and four limbs" means that having abandoned two limbs, the second dhyana is established, because there is no investigation and analysis there. Having abandoned three limbs, the third dhyana is established, because there is no joy there either. Having abandoned four limbs, the fourth dhyana is established, because there is no pleasure there either. Saying "feeling, etc., are not limbs" means that in reality, feeling, etc., are not said to be limbs, meaning that feeling, etc., are not abandoned in other dhyanas. Again, why are only five limbs? This means if you do not think this reason is so. If you say that only five are limbs because they are beneficial, that is not so, because investigation and analysis are more beneficial than mindfulness and wisdom. Just as mindfulness and wisdom are considered beneficial, are investigation and analysis not more beneficial? Because mindfulness abides, knows as it is, and there is no agitation or sinking, etc. Therefore, this should be examined, meaning that this should be examined through the ground view of the yogi, which is the source cited by the teacher there. In short, it should be understood that even though there are other dharmas, by what power are only investigation, etc., established as limbs? Because only by these can the limbs of the antidote, benefit, and the basis of both be perfected. For the formless realms, there is no establishment of limbs, because in quiescence there is only one taste. Therefore, it is said, for the limb of the antidote, for the limb of benefit, for the limb of the basis of both.

The saying called "ra" is: For the first dhyana, the limbs of antidote are vitarka (寻,gross investigation) and vicara (伺,subtle investigation), because they abandon the harmful mind of desire and various kinds of harm. The limbs of benefit are joy and happiness, because vitarka and vicara abandon the unfavorable aspects, and from being separated from them, joy and happiness arise. The supporting limb of those two is one-pointedness of mind, because by the power of the support, vitarka and so on arise. Similarly, for the second dhyana, the limb of antidote is inner clarity, because it abandons vitarka and vicara. Joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind are the remaining limbs, as before. For the third dhyana, the limbs of antidote are equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness, because they abandon joy. Happiness and one-pointedness of mind are the remaining limbs in order, as before. For the fourth dhyana, the limbs of antidote are purified equanimity and purified mindfulness, because they abandon happiness in the dhyana. The limb of benefit is the feeling that is neither happiness nor suffering. The supporting limb of those two is one-pointedness of mind. Complete purity is faith. The meaning of "complete purity is faith" is that faith itself is complete purity, therefore it is said that complete purity is faith. If there is no other entity, how can it be established as a mental factor? The meaning of "how can it be established as a mental factor" refers to vitarka and so on. A special one among those with fortune says that because the mind has many varieties, the differences in the states of mind also arise from the mind. The state of seeking the expression of mind is vitarka. The state of individually contemplating the expression of mind is vicara. The state of mind completely arising is vitarka. The state different from that is vicara. The state of mind not being distracted is samadhi. The state of mind arising very peacefully is inner clarity. The happiness that exists in dhyana cannot be mental happiness, the meaning of "cannot be mental happiness" is that if it is the same as the nature of the feeling of happiness, then it is mental.
