If asked whether the fourth also exists, there are four possibilities: The first possibility is all its limbs except for samadhi. The second possibility is all its limbs except for samadhi. The third possibility is samadhi. The fourth possibility is the dharmas other than the exposition, which is called subtracting one from those. Why is the happiness in the third dhyana said to be other things? How is it said? Those are the eighteen limbs of dhyana, after explaining in detail like this, and again from the perspective of names, it is like that. Substantially, there are eleven. Substantially, those are eleven, the basis of the first dhyana is the fifth. The second has inner extreme clarity. The third has equanimity, mindfulness, vigilance, and happiness, because it is said like that. Because there is no faculty of pleasure, it means that the faculty of pleasure is impossible. Even in all three dhyanas, there is only no faculty of pleasure arising from the mind. Then what is it? Only bodily pleasure is established as a limb, because it arises in the interval of the place of equipoise. It is said that this is the view of those who show with examples. According to their view, the faculty of pleasure is not limited to only the second desire realm and the basis of the first dhyana. Then what is it? The faculty of pleasure is also the four grounds from the practice in the desire realm to the basis of the third dhyana. Therefore, in the Vibhasa, it is said that the sutra monks say that according to the view of the Abhidharma masters, like drawing a bucket of water with a rope, the eye consciousness and so on are drawn from below to above. Their view is that eye consciousness and so on also exist in the basis of the second dhyana and so on. Some say that this statement is fabricated, referring to the part that arises from the mind. Because it is said with one's own voice, "the body experiences pleasure," it is said that when explaining the third dhyana, it is said like this: Separated from desire from joy, abiding in equanimity, mindfulness, and vigilance, the body experiences pleasure, and all noble ones possess equanimity, mindfulness, and vigilance, and abide in pleasure.

Saying "earth" means that the third dhyana is complete and dwells. If it arises from the mind, how can it be experienced by the body? "Body of mind" refers to the collection of mind. If it is said like that, what merit is there? Is it saying that happiness is experienced by the mind? Or should it be said to experience happiness? That is what is thought. Although the fourth dhyana is extremely cultivated, why is happiness not mentioned? This is because the fourth dhyana has extremely cultivated happiness and is the most predominant. Because other dhyanas are not as extremely cultivated as the fourth dhyana. Although it is abundant, happiness is not mentioned, happiness is not spoken of in the fourth dhyana. Because that happiness is not spoken of, it is known that the third dhyana only has the happiness of feeling. The fourth does not have the happiness of feeling, so it is not spoken of, that is what is thought. If it is said that extreme cultivation that is in accordance with the feeling of happiness is happiness, then, if the first and second dhyanas have extreme cultivation in accordance with the feeling of happiness, therefore they are called happiness. If it is thought that the extreme cultivation of the fourth dhyana is not in accordance with the feeling of happiness, so it is not spoken of, then, if that is the case, why is the extreme cultivation present in the third not spoken of as happiness? The extreme cultivation of the third dhyana is also in accordance with the feeling of happiness. Why is it not spoken of as the happiness of extreme cultivation? You only establish it as the happiness of feeling, not the happiness of extreme cultivation, because two kinds of happiness are not mentioned. If it is said that it is destroyed by equanimity, then, if it is thought that the equanimity of the third dhyana is the nature of being able to function, it destroys extreme cultivation, so it is not spoken of, that is not right, because only equanimity causes it to increase. That is not the case, because only equanimity causes the happiness of extreme cultivation of the third dhyana to increase. If the cause of harm itself is not able to increase, how can it be said that only equanimity causes it to increase?
