The fearlessness of "having exhausted all defilements" is also similar to this. Here too, similarly, divide the dharmas into ten types, and then combine them with six or ten consciousnesses. The power of knowing that karma is one's own obstacle, and the eight consciousnesses excluding the knowledge of the path, as all are included, just as I have said those dharmas that constitute obstacles for the Shravakas, this third fearlessness that is widely proclaimed is also similar to this. Here too, similarly, separate the dharmas, only those included in the truth of suffering and the truth of origin are obstacles, while those included in the truth of cessation and the truth of the path are not, therefore it should be combined as eight consciousnesses. The power of knowing the path of universal going, the ten or nine consciousnesses, as all are included, just as I have said the path of liberation for the Shravakas. The fearlessness of "in this" is also similar to this. Here, if one takes the path with defilements and the path without defilements along with their fruits, then it is ten consciousnesses; if one takes the path without fruits, then it is nine consciousnesses, it should be combined in this way. Fearlessness is not being afraid, and these can also make one not afraid, this is what the Vaibhashikas say, they say that consciousness is not fear. The teacher explains that what is created by consciousness is fearlessness, but consciousness itself is not. Or, fearlessness is not being afraid, all of this is the teacher's statement, in this way, it is the antidote to fear, it is a dharma born from the mind, and fear is also a dharma born from the mind. These things that are the cause of consciousness can also make one not afraid, so how can consciousness itself be fearlessness? What is created by consciousness is fearlessness, but consciousness itself is not. As it says in the sutra, monks, these three mindfulnesses are what the noble ones rely on, the noble ones rely on them, and they should be shown to the retinue. What are the three? Monks, here, the teacher is compassionate, has great compassion, hopes for benefit, hopes for good, has compassion, and says to the monks, this is beneficial to you, this is happiness to you.
