Because it is not superior to the realms of form and formlessness, it is appropriate as an antidote. Subsequent knowledge, meaning "in all aspects," also means being encompassed by the path of cultivation. Those, meaning "from below," refer to the aspects of impermanence and so on, which will be discussed below. The "sixteen aspects" refer to when it becomes warm, and so on. "Because of holding self-characteristics and general characteristics, etc." means because of holding self-characteristics and general characteristics. The word "etc." includes: Do! Sit! Go! and so on. These are neither aspects of self-characteristics nor aspects of general characteristics. What are they then? They are merely such aspects. "Both" refers to with outflows and without outflows. "Then," which appears extensively, is thinking of simultaneously holding onto desire and mind. The sutra says this: "Regarding a mind with desire, one thoroughly knows, as it actually is, that it is a mind with desire. Regarding a mind without desire, one thoroughly knows, as it actually is, that it is a mind without desire. Just as one thoroughly knows with desire and without desire, similarly, with hatred and without hatred, with delusion and without delusion, gathered and scattered, shrinking and expansive, small and large, untamed and tamed, agitated and unagitated, unabsorbed and absorbed, unpracticed and practiced, unliberated and liberated." It is like how clothes and dirt cannot be held simultaneously. "Like how clothes and dirt cannot be held simultaneously" is just like how clothes and dirt cannot be held simultaneously. How is it like that? When consciousness arises with the aspect of deciding "this is clothes," it does not hold onto dirt; when consciousness arises with the aspect of deciding "this is dirt," it does not hold onto clothes. The mixed having desire itself, and...

The so-called "having associated desire" means having (a state) that is associated with desire. The so-called "having associated desire," some say, is because it is related to the attainment of desire. Others say it is because it is the object of increasing desire. The so-called "two" refers to the synonyms of "having associated desire" and "having associated desire." Apart from that, the so-called "having outflows" refers to afflictions and non-virtuous, as well as worldly virtues, which are all said to have desire because they have associated desire. In this way, both of these are said to be merely having desire. Someone asks: Why do some schools say that the antidote to desire is being free from desire? This is because they say that if not being associated with desire is being free from desire, then being associated with other afflictions, that is, being associated with hatred and so on, would also become being free from desire. Not being associated with desire is also having desire, because the sutras do not say that being associated with hatred and so on is being free from desire, but rather say having hatred and having ignorance, and so on. According to those who believe that the antidote to desire is being free from desire, this is not a fault, because the antidote to desire is not associated with hatred and so on. Others say that this refers to the Dharmalakṣaṇavādins. If so, then the content such as "if" appears extensively, that is, if the mind associated with desire is having desire, and the antidote to desire is being free from desire, then what is not its antidote, the mind that is not the antidote to the mind with desire, that is, the non-afflicted, unobscured and unspecified mind, because it is not associated with desire, is therefore neither having desire, nor is it being free from desire because it is not the antidote to desire.

Words like "etc." should be applied similarly to "accompanied by hatred" and "accompanied by ignorance." If someone says that in this sutra, the mind corresponding to hatred is indeed "accompanied by hatred," and the antidote to hatred is said to be "free from hatred." If not corresponding to hatred is "free from hatred," then corresponding to other afflictions should also be established. Others say that if that is the case, then the non-afflicted mind that is not its antidote is neither "accompanied by hatred" nor "free from hatred," and the same should be said for the mind "accompanied by ignorance." Therefore, here it should also be considered that corresponding to desire is the mind "accompanied by desire." The word "also" means that corresponding to desire "also" is the same. For the distinction between "accompanied by ignorance" and "free from ignorance," it should be understood similarly. That is to say, therefore, in this sutra, corresponding to hatred should also be considered "accompanied by hatred," and corresponding to ignorance should also be considered "accompanied by ignorance." "In order to completely include the object" means that the virtuous mind does not correspond to distraction, therefore, it completely includes its object, thus being completely included. "Because it corresponds to afflicted sleep" means that there are two types of sleep: afflicted and non-afflicted. If the mind corresponds to afflicted sleep, then it is both included and distracted, because it is afflicted, which would lead to the fault of confusion. This would also contradict the treatises. For example, just as the detailed explanation of "the completely included mind knows as it is" is written in the commentary's disease. Among these, for the time being, mindfulness is not based on the completely included mind, because there is no sleep above the desire realm, and mindfulness is also not based on the desire realm. Wisdom on the path is also not based on the completely included mind.
