How should it be done? After understanding, the first is fourfold: having faith after understanding the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and the precepts that the noble ones cherish. Among these, the truth of suffering and so on are Dharma, because they are not the nature of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Therefore, in order, after understanding the Dharma, one obtains faith and the undefiled precepts cherished by the noble ones, but not faith after understanding the Buddha and Sangha. If one realizes the truth of the path, one obtains faith in the Buddha and his Shravaka Sangha, because the path is the nature of the Buddha and Sangha. What is meant here by "what is considered Dharma" is that if there are many such as "virtuous Dharma," then what is said, "after understanding the Dharma, one obtains faith," refers to what is meant here by "what is considered Dharma." Or, this refers to the Buddha Jewel and the Sangha Jewel, therefore, this is also considered here to be the Dharma Jewel. The nature of the Three Jewels is: whoever takes refuge in the Three, that is, the Dharma practiced by the Buddha and Sangha, the non-learner and both, and Nirvana. Because it is said like this, then, is this considered the Dharma of Nirvana? Therefore, here it is asked, "what is considered Dharma." "The three Dharma truths" and so on are explained in detail as the truths of suffering, origin, and cessation, as well as the undefiled path of the Bodhisattva in the learning stage, and the characteristics of the Learner and Non-learner of the Pratyekabuddha path, which are considered here to be Dharma. Therefore, "all four truths also" and so on are explained in detail as, if one realizes the truth of the path, one will also realize the Dharma of the characteristics of the Bodhisattva and Pratyekabuddha path, therefore, if one realizes all four truths, it is said that one obtains faith after understanding the Dharma. The path of the Buddha and Sangha is not called Dharma, because if one realizes it, one will have faith in the Buddha and Sangha. Also, how does realizing the path become the third characteristic of faith?

If someone asks, will the faith that arises from knowing the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha manifest simultaneously? This is because these three faiths depend on different bases of faith, so there is no fault in obtaining three different names. Or, the faith that arises from knowing the Dharma arises now, and all three faiths will be obtained in the future, therefore it is said: "If the path is directly realized, faith will also arise in the Buddha and his Sangha." If the faith that arises from knowing is established based on the ground, then the faith that arises from knowing the Dharma should be refuted first. Therefore, it is explained that the order of these is arranged in the same way as how it manifests from standing up. It is like a doctor, medicine, and nurse. The Blessed One said in the sutra: "The doctor is the supreme remover of pain," so he is like a doctor because he proclaims the medicine of Dharma. Dharma is like medicine because it can cure the disease of afflictions and can attain the disease-free Nirvana. The Sangha is like a nurse, for the sake of attaining the disease-free Nirvana, helping each other. Because the discipline done with great joy is also great joy, it is said that the three actions done with great joy, that is, "Wonderful! The Blessed One is the perfectly complete Buddha. His Dharma and Vinaya are well-spoken. His Shravaka Sangha is well-entered," the discipline done with these actions is also great joy. The discipline itself is great joy, or the great joy of discipline itself is unpolluted, so discipline is great joy, that is, the great joy of discipline is the last of the three joys, the fourth is proclaimed. Why? The answer is: Because it is widely spread that "Wonderful! The Blessed One is the perfectly complete Buddha," so it is the accomplishment of such great joy, the discipline that the noble ones rejoice in is the summary of accomplishment. Or, like becoming disease-free, what does this mean? Like the order of doctor, medicine, nurse, and disease-free, the great joy of discipline is the last to be proclaimed. Or, like the teacher, the path, and the path friend.
