Everything should be combined. Thus, knowing exhaustion and knowing non-arising is enlightenment. In order to thoroughly accomplish the meaning of the limbs, and then thoroughly accomplish the general meaning, because it is in accordance with this, it is said, "The thirty-seven are in accordance with enlightenment." To be in accordance with enlightenment is to be in accordance with it. Its essence is to be in accordance with it. Because it is in accordance with it, it is in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment. Because it is good and in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment, in the scriptures, the four mindfulnesses and so on, the thirty-seven are said to be in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment. To say that there are thirty substances is the doctrine of some. According to the Vaibhashikas, because body and speech are different, the limbs of morality are two substances, so it will be explained as eleven. To say, "Mindfulness is wisdom," is a synonym for saying that mindfulness is wisdom. This is for establishing mindfulness, as it is explained in detail in the sutras: abiding contemplating the body in the body. To say, "Diligence is right exertion," is like this: in order to abandon the evil and unwholesome dharmas that have arisen, generate desire, make effort, and all occurrences of "initiating diligence" should be combined. To say, "Samadhi of the feet of miraculous power," is like this: possessing the samadhi of desire and the activity of abandonment, cultivating the feet of miraculous power, all occurrences should be combined. Here, the activity of abandonment is mentioned, and eight appear in the sutras. If asked what the eight are, it is like this: whatever such desire is, whatever effort is, whatever pliancy is, whatever mindfulness is, whatever awareness is, whatever mental fabrication is, whatever manifest mental fabrication is, and whatever equanimity is, these are called the activity of abandonment. Therefore, for the time being, "faculty and" and so on appear extensively, which are the nature of the faculty and power spoken of by their own names, and whatever the five substances of faith, diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom are, from these, mindfulness.

What are the four mindfulnesses? That is wisdom alone. Among the branches of enlightenment, what is the discriminating awareness of dharma, the perfect enlightenment branch, and what is the right view among the paths, is not another substance. What are the four right abandonments, what is the diligence, the perfect enlightenment branch among the branches of enlightenment, and what is the right effort among the paths, that is diligence alone. What are the four legs of magical power, what is the samadhi, the perfect enlightenment branch among the branches of enlightenment, and what is the right samadhi among the paths, is samadhi alone. If something is not the nature of the faculty of wisdom, what remains? Among the branches of enlightenment, joy, pliancy, and equanimity, the perfect enlightenment branches, and among the branches of the path, right thought, and the three branches of discipline, namely right speech, right action, and right livelihood, these remain. The so-called ten substances are the five, such as faith, and the five, such as joy, the perfect enlightenment branch. The three branches of discipline are of the nature of non-manifest form, therefore they are established as one substance. According to the Vaibhashikas, the actions of body and speech are different and of different kinds, therefore they are two substances, so there are eleven substances. In terms of thought, there is no fault in either way. If actually assembled, how many substances are there, if all are counted, then it is not ten substances. Because the non-manifest form of equipoise is seven substances, so it should be said that there are sixteen substances. Because the main thing is mentioned, it is said that the four mindfulnesses, etc., are the nature of wisdom, etc. Thus it is said that the four mindfulnesses, right exertion, and the legs of magical power, are all the defiled and undefiled dharmas that arise from the merits arising from the combination, from hearing, thinking, and meditating, according to their respective situations.

Yes. The term "chief" means that others enter by its power, but it is not that there are no others. Since the "chief" of the mindfulnesses is wisdom, therefore wisdom is mentioned. But it is not that mindfulness is only wisdom. What then? It is wisdom, diligence, samadhi, joy, pliancy, equanimity, and correct reflection, etc. The phrase "arising from practice" is to clarify the faith, etc., that is obtained from birth. Similarly, the "chief" of the right abandonments is diligence, and the "chief" of the miraculous feet is samadhi, which should be explained in detail. If asked, where does it come from that the miraculous feet are samadhi? From the sutras. In the sutra it says: Monks, monks, having obtained samadhi by relying on desire, that is the samadhi of this desire. Monks, monks, having also obtained samadhi by relying on mind, diligence, and examination, that is the samadhi of this examination, and so on. The phrase "therefore it correctly places body, speech, and mind" means placing, holding, determining, or sometimes entering by it, so it is placing. The phrase "because it is the basis for the attainment of all qualities" means that the characteristic of the attainment of all qualities—miraculous power—relies on that samadhi, and is the basis of the miraculous feet, so it is called the miraculous feet. Some say that miraculous power is only samadhi, and that desire, etc., i.e., desire, mind, diligence, and examination, are the feet. According to the proponents of these distinctions, if desire and mind are superfluous, then adding these two to the eleven branches, it becomes thirteen branches that are in accordance with the limbs of enlightenment. Diligence and wisdom are remaining, because they are included in the right abandonments and mindfulnesses. The phrase "extensively explained up to becoming many" means becoming many, etc.
