I say that from any of those states of having obtained the four abodes, this liberation will completely degenerate, because it still exists in a mixed state. Only the unmixed, cautious, and steadfast state, whereby one realizes the liberation of the mind with the body, I say that it will not completely degenerate in any way. Ananda, therefore you should train in this way: you should overcome any gains and respect. Ananda, you should train in this way, that the mind should not be completely bound by the gains and respect that arise. Thus it was said. If the Vaibhashikas say that because of the special emphasis on "immovable," there is complete degeneration of liberation in time and conditions, therefore (in the sutra) it says: If it is said that there is degeneration in time and conditions, then we also say that there is degeneration in time and conditions. This should be examined, whether liberation degenerates in time and conditions, this is what should be examined. How to examine? (In the sutra) it says, is liberation in time and conditions the Arhat himself? Or is liberation in time and conditions merely worldly meditation? Why should one doubt in this way? Because it mentions "the Samadhi of the actual meditation," etc., meditation itself is Samadhi, so it is the Samadhi of meditation. Mentioning "actual" is because it is the most excellent of the easy paths to liberation. The so-called "manifesting at the right time" is because it manifests at certain times of silence, etc., because it arises from time, so it is also called "liberation in time and conditions." The so-called "should be sought repeatedly" is because when it degenerates again and again, one wants to obtain it, because it is what should be strived for, this is its ultimate meaning. Others say, "because it is a taste to be savored," this refers to the Bhikkhu's joy, because he possesses meditation that is similar to the contaminated dharmas and can savor the taste, so it is thought to be "should be sought repeatedly." The so-called liberation of the Arhat himself, extensively

Arising is the liberation of the Arhat, so it is the liberation of the Arhat. Because it is always connected by the way of attainment. The statement "It is also not time and combination" is to prevent and show the liberation of the Arhat from the liberation of time and combination. Also, the statement "Because it is not the meaning to be pursued, so it is not stinginess" is to prevent from stinginess, showing that the liberation of the Arhat is not stinginess. Because it is always connected, it is not the meaning to be pursued, so it is not stinginess, this is a summary word. The statement "Only arising from the higher mind" is because it exists in the higher mind, so it arises from the higher mind, which is to abide in the present Dharma happily. Why is it said that it is only from them that they degenerate? Because whoever obtains the arising of the higher mind, the four who abide happily in the present Dharma, I say that this will degenerate from any one of them. If liberation is the nature of time and combination, it may degenerate from the nature of the Arhat, then why is it said that it only degenerates from them? It should not be said that it only degenerates from them, this is a summary word. The statement "Because the ability is lost" means that the ability to manifest Samadhi is lost. The statement "That is the nature of not degenerating" is said in the Sutra to be different from the nature of not degenerating. After explaining the eighteen learners in detail, the Blessed One taught: What are the nine non-learners? They are the nature of degeneration, the nature of not degenerating, the nature of contemplating death, the nature of following and protecting, not moving from the dwelling place, having the merit of realization, the immovable nature, liberation by wisdom, and liberation from the two parts. These nine are non-learners. Among them, which one is completely from those who abide happily in the present Dharma?

That which changes and declines is of the nature of complete decline. That which does not completely change and decline from those very things is of the nature of complete non-decline. Similarly, it should be applied to the nature of thinking about death and so on. For example, whoever thinks of death because of the fear of the decline of samadhi is of the nature of thinking about death. Whoever slightly guards the distinction of qualities is of the nature of guarding. Whoever abides only in any quality, and does not move even if not guarded, is unmoving from abiding. The term 'what understands and produces a distinction of qualities' means that it is of the nature of understanding. That which does not completely change and decline from what has arisen is of the nature of immovability. If asked, what is the difference? The reason for asking without seeing the difference is that all three, including the nature of complete non-decline, possess complete non-decline. 'Not arising from cultivation' means that it is a naturally sharp faculty, not obtained through cultivating the faculty. 'It will change and move from that' means that the distinction of qualities changes from that. 'This appears to be a distinction' means that the teacher himself explains his own doctrine. If the Vaibhashikas say, 'Isn't the venerable Krishnagotra completely declining from the Arhat himself?' If they say so, an answer should be given. The venerable Krishnagotra is spoken of extensively. 'Becoming a learner' means that he is not yet an Arhat. 'Striking with a weapon without regard for body and life' means striking with a weapon. 'Obtaining Arhatship only at the time of death' means 'under the striking of a weapon,' and at the very moment of being struck by the weapon, he completely entered into nirvana. Also, from the Sutra of the Ten Arising, it is said, 'What is the dharma to be generated?' One is mentioned. If asked, what is it?
