Sometimes it is not the first, if it is gradual in the end. For it, whether it is the fruit of stream-enterer, or the fruit of once-returner, or the fruit of non-returner, whichever is the first fruit, it will not be completely lost; whether it is the later obtained fruit of once-returner, or non-returner, or the fruit of Arhat, it will be completely lost. If it is done like that, it means that whatever the lineage and the first fruit are, it will not be completely lost. The order is five kinds, six kinds and seven kinds, which means that the one who follows and protects the Dharma has five kinds: that is, abiding in that place and completely passing into Nirvana, transformation of the senses, completely degenerating and becoming a fool, completely degenerating, and returning again in the lineage of the one who has the Dharma of thinking about death; the one who does not move from the dwelling place has six kinds: that is, the previous five kinds, and the sixth kind of returning again in the lineage of the one who follows and protects the Dharma. The one who has a share of realization has seven kinds: that is, the previous six kinds, and the seventh kind of returning again in the lineage of the one who does not move from the dwelling place. If he becomes a scholar, then the word "later" is removed from the heart. Whatever the first lineage is, it only abides in the position of a scholar, not in other positions. If it is not like that, it is to obtain the difference of lineage, because the difference is obtained from the lineage of the position of a scholar, so that person will only increase and will not completely degenerate. How is it done? For example, if a completely degenerated Dharma practitioner, in the position of Arhat, becomes a person with a share of realization by practicing the senses, then he will completely degenerate from the position of Arhat, and if he becomes a scholar, then according to this reasoning, if he completely degenerates, he will not abide between the lineage of not moving from the dwelling place to the lineage of the Dharma practitioner who has the thought of death. If it is not like that, it is if he abides in another lineage. To obtain the difference of lineage, it means that that lineage is more superior than the lineage of complete degeneration. Therefore, Arhat

If one completely falls away from oneself, then even what is obtained through cultivating the faculties will undoubtedly be completely lost. Why is it said that there is no falling away from the first fruit? Because what is the first fruit? It refers to the fruit of stream-enterer, once-returner, or non-returner. The afflictions to be abandoned by seeing are without a basis, that is, without a support, that is the definition. These enter into the basis of self. The detailed explanation is that the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing arise in dependence on the view of self. Why? Because they have the view of the aggregates as their root. Thus, the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing all arise due to the power of the view of self. The sutra also says: 'Whatever different views exist in the world, they are based on the view of the aggregates, they arise from the view of the aggregates, they belong to the category of the view of the aggregates, and they are born from the view of the aggregates.' The so-called 'self' also does not exist, because it has no basis, so there is no falling away. The so-called 'focusing on the truth' is because of clinging to the truths such as suffering as permanent, etc. So, what are the afflictions that are not like that? For example, desire and other afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation are also because of clinging to impure things as pure, pleasant, permanent, and having the nature of self, so they are perverse objects. The so-called 'imputing what is not a true self' is like what is said in the sutra: 'Monks, what is the true view of self? It is merely to truly view these five aggregates of appropriation as self and as belonging to self.' The so-called 'clinging to extremes, etc., also belongs to its basis' means that other afflictions to be abandoned by seeing also depend on the basis of the view of self, such as clinging to 'I am permanent,' 'I am annihilated,' or 'I do not exist,' or 'Only this is supreme,' 'This is pure,' 'Does this exist or not?' and so on, existing in such ways, so it is said that they have no basis, which means they have no support.
