The term "now" also means to mix and to guide. It refers to the mixing of the fourth dhyana with outflows and those without outflows. The saying "being supreme among the easy paths" means that the easy path is actually the four dhyanas, because it says, "The paths of dhyana are easy." The fourth dhyana is supreme among them because it is free from eight faults. As for "when," the term "saying" refers to the exposition of the Vaibhashika school's treatises, because their own treatises extensively state that "moments cannot be mixed" below. The saying "two moments are like the path of immediate contiguity" refers to those with and without outflows. The saying "the third is like the path of liberation" refers to those without outflows. Dull faculties are mixed because they also fear afflictions. Moreover, the word "also" indicates that they are mixed in order to be reborn in the Pure Abodes and to abide in bliss in this very life. Sharp faculties are mixed only in order to be reborn in the Pure Abodes and to abide in bliss in this very life. For them, it is not because of fearing afflictions, since it is impossible to completely degenerate. Furthermore, how is it that they mix because of fearing afflictions in order not to completely degenerate? It is said that they do so by prolonging the samadhi that is similar to tasting flavors, in order not to completely degenerate from the fruit. The saying "there are five kinds" refers to small, medium, large, very large, and extremely large. The saying "the first has three minds" means that the person has that much capacity. Similarly, the same should be said for the ones below. The saying "the second has six" refers to the three: without outflow, with outflow, and without outflow; and again, the three: without outflow, with outflow, and without outflow, so there are six. The third has nine. The fourth has twelve. The fifth has fifteen.

Regarding the earth, it should be applied in the same way. The fruits of those, "as their number," means that the fruits of those alternating meditations are the five Pure Abodes as their number. From the fruit of small meditation being the Non-Great Heaven, to the fruit of extremely great meditation being Akanistha. "Because of the increase of faith, etc.," means that this is the tenet of the venerable Palden. From the fruit of meditation and faith being predominant being the Non-Great Heaven, to similarly the fruit of meditation and wisdom being predominant being Akanistha. Any Non-Returner refers to one who is liberated by faith or attained by sight. "For the sake of the direct realization of the body" means that because of being without mind, it is directly realized only by the body. If asked: How is it directly realized only by the body? The answer is: Because it arises dependent on the body. "It will become like this" means that this is the Acharya's own tenet. "Attainment and" etc., what is said as "by those who directly realize" means that during meditative absorption, it is directly realized by obtaining the support that corresponds to it, and also during emergence from absorption, it is directly realized by the wisdom that individually and correctly experiences it. "What has become directly realized is what enables direct realization" means that in the state of having obtained the pacification of the body together with consciousness, it is thought that it is possible to directly realize. Having obtained the pacification of the body together with consciousness, therefore in the state of the pacification of the body without consciousness, it is also directly realized that it is obtained. Where the sutra says "eighteen learners," it refers to when the householder Anathapindika asked the Blessed One in Jeta Grove Monastery: "How many monks are worthy of offerings?" The Blessed One replied: "Householder, eighteen learners and nine non-learners are worthy of offerings. What are the eighteen learners? Those who have entered in order to directly realize the fruit of Stream-Enterer, and the Stream-Enterer; those who have entered in order to directly realize the fruit of Once-Returner, and the Once-Returner; those who have entered in order to directly realize the fruit of Non-Returner, and the Non-Returner; and those who have entered in order to directly realize the fruit of Arhat.

Following with faith, following with Dharma, believing with faith, attaining with vision, being born from lineage to lineage, having a single interruption, completely passing into nirvana in the intermediate state, completely passing into nirvana after birth, completely passing into nirvana with manifestation, completely passing into nirvana without manifestation, transferring upwards. These householders are the eighteen learners. What are the nine non-learners? Those of the nature of complete decay, those of the nature of thinking of death, those of the nature of following protection, those who do not move from their dwelling, those who possess a share of realization, those of the nature of non-movement, those of the nature of non-decay, those liberated by wisdom, those liberated from both parts. These householders are said to be the nine non-learners. As for the three trainings and their fruits, the three trainings are the nature of the noble path, namely, higher discipline and higher wisdom. Their fruit is separation. The learners are distinguished by their differences, which is a synonym for the difference in learning and the difference in its fruit. What is that difference like? The learning and the fruit of separation of the eighteen learners are different from each other. Cessation attainment is not the nature of the path of abandonment, therefore it is not a training, nor is it the nature of separation, therefore it is not a fruit of training. Therefore, those who possess it, that is, those who possess cessation attainment, how are these eighteen learners not spoken of as a distinction of learning? It is not that this is not a training. In this regard, the sutra says, "Eighteen learners," why is the body witness not mentioned? It is only because it is not spoken of as such a training. The so-called great outline of distinctions refers to the five non-returners because they approach the form realm, and the other four formless realms, and the other who pass into nirvana here, and so on. This is the forty-ninth fascicle. Detailed.
