As it says in the Sutra of Bones, "Observe the bones, etc." Like that. Regarding this, the practice of yoga dwelling on impurity, in brief, has three aspects: the beginner, the one who has completely familiarized, and the one with complete intention. Among them, for the beginner in the yoga practice of gathering the mind, first, focus the mind on one toe, observe the toe rotting, and likewise, up to the entire body, one should visualize it as a skeleton of bones. The one who has completely familiarized, likewise visualizes up to half of the skull. The one with complete intention, should fix the mind up to between the two eyebrows. In detail, "In the ocean of bones, expanding and contracting, is for the beginner." and so on, three situations arise. If practiced in this way, a four-fold question will arise, therefore it is said in detail, "Those who have familiarized with intention and those who have not familiarized, etc." The first statement is that the impurity of intention that has been familiarized is focused on one's own body. Because the body is small, the object of focus is also small, therefore it is small, but it is not because the intention has been familiarized that the power is small, but because the intention is complete, this is the concluding remark. The second statement is that the impurity of intention that has not been familiarized is focused on the boundless ocean of bones. Because the power is small, it is small, but not because the object of focus is small. The near-absorption concentration, and those with special samadhi, etc., refer to the near-absorption concentration of the four dhyanas and those with special samadhi, etc., which exist in the desire realm. In this way, there are four near-absorption concentrations of dhyana, so it is the tenth ground. Therefore, "focused on the meaning" means that because it is focused on color and shape, it is focused on the meaning, but not focused on the name, this is how it is considered. The name of the impure aspect is established, which means that the meaning of the aspect does not need to be explained, this is how it is considered. The object of focus at that time, means that just like eye consciousness, from the past object of focus is also past, up to the present object of focus is also between the present,

Thus it is. It is not done in brief because of ascertaining one's own aim and because of having faith in mind. Because of being familiar and unfamiliar, that is, because of being familiar in samsara from beginningless time, it is obtained by being free from attachment. Because of being unfamiliar, it arises from application. Because it is the nature of wisdom, it enters by generating its power. From those, mindfulness enters by generating power. Because the establishment of mindfulness of the body, etc., enters by generating the power of mindfulness, the wisdom of the body, etc., is called mindfulness, and likewise, because the power of mindfulness is generated and enters, the wisdom of breathing in and out is called mindfulness of breathing in and out. The five grounds are the three approximations excluding the approximation of the fourth dhyana, as well as the special dhyana, and because it is practiced in the desire realm, it exists in the five grounds. Why is that? Because it is associated with equanimity. Thus, in the approximation of the first dhyana, etc., there is a feeling of equanimity. Although there is also equanimity in the approximation of the fourth dhyana, it is not through breathing in and out. Again, why is it determined only to be associated with the faculty of equanimity? Therefore, it is said, "Because it is in accordance with discrimination." That is its antidote, the antidote to discrimination, the mindfulness of breathing in and out is not associated with those pleasant and painful feelings. Pleasant and joyful feelings also hinder concentration, becoming enemies of concentration, and breathing in and out is also not associated with those because it is to be accomplished by concentration. Because it is in accordance with discrimination, etc., it is called "Thus it is said," the word "said" indicates other tenets. Therefore, in which other aspects in the actual dhyana, this should be extensively established. The above is from the fourth dhyana onwards. It is called having a basis in the desire realm, because there is discrimination there.
