What are the nine aspects of abandonment, from the greatest of the great to the smallest of the small, that are abandoned by meditating on the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation? Among those aspects, the abandonment of all except the last, smallest of the small aspect of the peak of existence is attained only at three times: the time when the antidote repeatedly arises, the time of the fruit of arhatship itself, and the time of transformation of faculties. The abandonment of whatever is the smallest of the small aspect that is practiced in the formless realm is at the same time as the arising of the antidote and the attainment of the fruit of abandonment itself, so it can be called the time of the arising of the antidote, or it can be called the time of attaining the fruit of arhatship itself, whichever it may be, and the time of transformation of faculties, at two times. For the time being, that is how it is said to be attained by dull faculties. Sharp faculties abandon it at one time, at the time of transformation of faculties, and some afflictions are attained at five times, so it should be said that they are attained between two times. For those, there is no transformation of faculties at all times. Therefore, there is attainment of abandonment of afflictions at one time. If it is like the abandonment of the smallest of the small aspect of the peak of existence, which is to be abandoned by cultivation, then it will not be attained again, so it is not spoken of. Because the cause is attributed to the effect, it is called abandonment. The cause is complete knowledge, which is the nature of wisdom. Because the cause is attributed to the effect, it is said that abandonment is complete knowledge, which is the attribution of the proximate cause, just as it is said that these six sources of contact, which were previously manifestly accumulated and intentionally heaped up, should be known as previous actions. Furthermore, from where is it shown that abandonment is the expression of complete knowledge? From the sutra: Monks, the dharmas to be completely known, and complete knowledge, and the person who possesses complete knowledge should also be explained. What are the dharmas to be completely known? They are the five aggregates of grasping. What is complete knowledge? It is the abandonment of desire and attachment to desire, and the complete transcendence of desire and attachment to desire. This is called complete knowledge, as is extensively explained in the sutra. In the desire realm, the first

The term 'one in the exhaustion of two' is called 'complete knowledge.' It is established as complete knowledge because there is no attainment of detachment, and the peak of existence is destroyed, because both causes are completely subdued. This complete knowledge will be explained from here. 'Abandoning what is in accordance with the final part' is a synonym for abandoning the outflows of the desire realm; this itself is its name. 'Abandoning the outflow of form' means abandoning the outflows of the form realm; from its name, it is called 'complete knowledge of the exhaustion of desire in the form realm.' Although there are afflictions such as pride and near afflictions that operate in the form realm, the establishment of this complete knowledge is because desire is the main thing there. The bondage that accords with the higher part is said to be the 'complete knowledge of the exhaustion of desire in the form realm.' 'Complete knowledge that exhausts all bondages' is the name for abandoning all outflows. 'Complete knowledge is shown separately' means that abandoning the phenomena that should be abandoned by cultivation and that operate in the form realm is the 'complete knowledge of the exhaustion of desire in the form realm.' For formless phenomena, it is the 'complete knowledge that exhausts all bondages,' and that is why it is said so. 'However, it is not for the phenomena to be abandoned by seeing' means why the complete knowledge of the phenomena to be abandoned by seeing that operate in the form and formless realms is not shown separately. Likewise, abandoning the phenomena to be abandoned by seeing that operate in the form and formless realms is also three kinds of complete knowledge, and that is why it is said so. 'Because the antidotes for the phenomena to be abandoned by cultivation are different' means that, like this, the antidotes for the nine types of phenomena to be abandoned by cultivation that operate in the form realm in the ground and in the ground are the uninterrupted path and the path of liberation, the uncontaminated, invincible ground, etc., and there are nine types between the contaminated near attainment of the second dhyana and the near attainment of the sphere of infinite space, while the antidotes for the phenomena that operate in the formless realm are the uninterrupted path and the path of liberation.
