That which is called "holding views" refers to those views that are held as supreme. The three views are also eighteen substances. That which is called "eighteen substances" is the remainder of the word "is," and the meaning of the word is that for the aggregates, the extreme, and the wrong views, the number of substances is eighteen, which is a concluding word. That which is called "the two holding views are also only eighteen" is that the word "substance" should be understood in context. For example, in the desire realm, there are two views, the view of the aggregates and the holding to extremes. These are also considered to be only abandoned by seeing suffering. Wrong views are of four types, from those abandoned by seeing suffering to those abandoned by seeing the path. Thus, there are six in the desire realm. Just as in the desire realm, so too in the form and formless realms, it is the same, so it is eighteen. The two holding views are also eighteen substances. For example, in the desire realm, the holding view from that abandoned by seeing suffering to that abandoned by seeing the path, there are four types. Holding vows and asceticism as supreme also has two types, that abandoned by seeing suffering and that abandoned by seeing the path. Thus, there are six in the desire realm. Just as in the desire realm, so too in the form and formless realms, it is the same, so it is eighteen substances. That which is called "the remainder are not" refers to the other views. That which is called "the grasped and the grasper are different" means that the grasped is the all-pervasive application of views, and the grasper is the all-pervasive application of holding views. The reason is that it is entirely unwholesome and is the nature of being independent. That which is called "explaining them" means extracting and explaining from among the afflictions such as jealousy and stinginess, shamelessness, and so on. That which is called "which has these two, the entirely unwholesome and the independent" means which has these two, the entirely unwholesome itself and the independent itself; there are no other such afflictions. That which is called "there are no other such afflictions" means that shamelessness and lack of embarrassment are also one.
