It is not the case that all things necessarily arise together with all that arises from the mind, nor is it the case that all that arises from the mind necessarily arises together with all minds. The phrase "all conditioned characteristics" means that all those characteristics of conditioned things, such as arising, undoubtedly arise together. What is that? Whether it is form, mind, mental factors, or non-associated formations, whatever slightly arises, all of that is referred to. Because it has already been mentioned above that unconditioned things are the only things that do not arise. The phrase "the word is spoken for the sake of distinguishing" means that some arise together with attainment, namely, whatever is counted as sentient beings. Some do not arise, namely, whatever is not counted as sentient beings, this is for the sake of distinguishing. Although there is attainment for those who are extinguished by discrimination and non-discrimination, they do not become arising, so these two are not mentioned, because this is based on necessarily arising together. If it is said that there is no attainment for those who are not counted as sentient beings, what is the reason for this? Because it is common to all sentient beings. It should be understood that only the attainment that arises together, and the previous and subsequent times of arising together of those with attainment, and what is not so. The phrase "the realm of opportunity" is a synonym for "the realm of arising." The phrase "those of many grounds" means that it is the nature of many grounds because it arises in all minds. It is said that these ten dharmas arise together in every moment of the mind. The word "it is said" is because it is to show the views of other schools. One's own school is that desire and so on do not arise in all minds, for example, this teacher wrote in the five aggregates: What is desire? It is the manifestation of wanting for the object of thought. What is faith? It is holding onto the determined object as it is. Mind is the manifestation of mental activity, that is, the mind makes it extremely agitated, just like making it extremely agitated.

It is a synonym for "causing to shake." That which is called "grasping the characteristic of an object" is a synonym for grasping the distinction of an object. That which is called "contact" is the contact born from the combination of object, sense faculty, and consciousness. That which is called "contact" is the contact born from the combination of object, sense faculty, and consciousness, and is contact like contact itself. That is, that with which the object, sense faculty, and consciousness touch each other, is contact. That which is called "discriminating dharma" is discriminating because it discriminates dharmas well, or it is discriminating because it will discriminate well with this. With what can one discriminate among such mixed dharmas, like flowers, that these are with outflows, these are without outflows, these are with form, these are without form? That is, it is a synonym for being able to specifically distinguish. Discriminating well among dharmas is discriminating dharma. Because it is famous, it should be called "wisdom," but in the summary of words, to be in accordance with the verses, it is said to be "buddhi (Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, intelligence)." That which is called "mindfulness" is not forgetting the object, that is, with what one possesses, the mind does not forget the object, like that which is expressed manifestly, that is mindfulness. That which is called "attention" is the engagement of the mind, that is, it is a synonym for the mind engaging and focusing on the object. Attention is attention, or because it engages and focuses on the object with attention, it is called attention. That which is called "desire" is definitely grasping the qualities of that object. Others say that it is desire. Yogachara practitioners think that it is grasping as it is certain. That which is called "samadhi" is the one-pointedness of mind. Here, "peak" and "object" have the same meaning. That is, with what one possesses, the mind continuously enters into one object, that is samadhi. If samadhi is present in all minds, why strive in dhyana and so on? Answer: It is for accomplishing samadhi with strength. How can one mind have mental factors?
