What is known as the root of a flower? It is similar to how the most obvious and potent element is perceived when touching a collection of needles and twigs, where that element is predominant. It is said that even when a collection of needles and twigs are together, only the touch of the needles is clearly noticed due to their sharpness, but not the touch of the twigs due to their bluntness. Similarly, hardness is noted only in some things like wood, while liquidity is noted in others, like water; warmth in others, like fire; and movement in others, like wind. However, it is not that the four great elements are absent in those respective collections. The phrase "like the taste of flour and salt powder" is exemplified by noticing the taste of flour powder and salt powder, where only the taste of salt powder is clearly noticed, but not the taste of flour, and it is similar here. The phrase "for gathering, holding, ripening, and moving" means that through the action of gathering, it is understood that things like wood have the element of water. If the element of water were not there, it would scatter like something thrown by the handful. Through the action of lifting boats and the like in water, it is understood that there is the element of earth. Through the action of ripening, it is understood that there is the element of fire. If it were not there, wood and the like would rot. Through the action of moving, it is understood that there is the element of wind. If it were not there, it would not grow and expand. Similarly, it should be applied to other things as well. The phrase "if encountering conditions" and so on, occurs extensively because when encountering conditions like fire, hardness and the like can also change into liquidity and the like, and liquidity and the like can also change into hardness and the like. For example, if there is fire, even hard iron becomes soft. Therefore, it should be known that iron has the element of water. Similarly, liquidity also becomes hard when encountering conditions like cold. Therefore, it should be known that this has the element of earth. Similarly, warmth is noticed from friction. Therefore, it should be known that this has the element of fire. Similarly, it should be applied to other things as appropriate.

Eleventh Chapter. Others say that through the difference in the degree of coldness of water, it can be understood that warmth exists. This is said by the monk Pallen. Because water has the distinctions of cold, very cold, and extremely cold, therefore, corresponding to that, small fire, very small fire, and extremely small fire arise, which is the difference in coldness. Therefore, it can be known that there is the element of fire in it. The detailed explanation of "even if not mixed" is to refute the view of that school. For example, even if there is no mixing or confusion with other substances for an enemy, there are still differences. Just as the difference in essence causes sound to have the distinctions of clear, very clear, and extremely clear, so too it is here. Again, for example, feeling is not mixed with any other substance, but due to the difference of the three essences, there are also the distinctions of very and extremely. Similarly, it is here as well. This does not prove the existence of fire, because these waters merely have cold, very cold, and extremely cold. Others say that these things exist in terms of seeds, which is the view of the Sutra School. To exist in terms of seeds means to exist in terms of ability, which is synonymous with "to exist in terms of power." "Not in its own essence" means not in the form of substance. Then, yogis, through the difference of intention, are able to create elements such as the element of gold, the element of silver, the element of bronze, and so on, which is only ability. Why? Because it is said in the sutra, "In this collection of trees, there are various kinds of elements." Here, the Blessed One spoke in this way regarding the ability of the elements. Therefore, there is no possibility that many elements such as gold and silver exist in their own essence. "What color does wind have?" This is only a refutation of the assertion of the Vaibhashikas. If it is admitted that there are no senses, no sound, and that the subtle atoms are eight substances. Since this has been determined, how can it be specifically pointed out that wind has color? Here

No matter what the color, it cannot be discerned. Those who say, "This principle should be believed, not speculated upon," are the Vaibhashikas, who believe that this principle was spoken by holy believers, so it should be believed, not speculated upon. Or, "because of mixed grasping of smell," this shows that in some ways it can also be speculated upon. Separating from substances with smell, the smell of wind can be discerned, and that smell is not confused with color, because where there is smell, there will be color. The argument here is: wind has color, because it has smell, like a flower on the tip of the nose. It is said in the scriptures that there is no smell or taste in the realm of form, because it says in the scriptures: except for the realms of smell, taste, nose, and tongue consciousness. Therefore, the atoms that exist there have six, seven, and eight substances. What exists there refers to those that exist there. This refers to the atoms such as the atoms that exist there, because there is no sense organ or sound here, which is said to be the eighth substance, then there it is the sixth substance. The sense organ of the body and the ninth substance, there it is the seventh substance. The tenth substance related to other sense organs, there it is the eighth substance. If these also have sound, then they are the seventh, eighth, and ninth substances, it should be understood in this way. Because it is similar to what has already been said, it will not be repeated, which is the same as what has already been said, so it will not be repeated. Also, is matter only regarded as matter here? Broadly speaking, does it refer to regarding as matter whatever substance has its own characteristics in the nature of reality? Or does it refer to the matter of aggregates? Because aggregates also have common and special characteristics, matter cannot be spoken of. Then what will happen? This is the meaning of "then what fault will there be?" If matter is only regarded as matter, then
