That which is called "knowing" is complete understanding. Because it exists here, or because it has the state of guarding all that is known, therefore it possesses all that is known. That which is called "such a faculty" is synonymous with possessing all that is known, it is "such a faculty." That which is called "three are without defilement" is that it must be definitely understood that the three are only without defilement. Regarding the difference in the forms of contaminated and uncontaminated, in the 'Section on Elements' it says: 'The truth of the uncontaminated path.' And it says: 'Those three are contaminated and uncontaminated, the rest are all contaminated.' Since it is so, hasn't it already been explained? Although it is true that these differences in form and so on have been explained, that was explained from the general aspect, not from the individual aspect. Therefore, in order for the students to easily understand, these differences in form and so on are explained from the meaning of each word. It should also be understood that it is also said in that way. The saying "nine are two" need not be abandoned, for the saying "nine are two" will be established simply by definitely understanding them as contaminated and uncontaminated. If these were to become entirely uncontaminated, then they would be shown among the faculties that make all things known, which are entirely uncontaminated. However, if they were to become entirely contaminated, then they would be shown among the faculties that are entirely contaminated, such as the form faculties, life, suffering, and displeasure. Since it is not like that, therefore it is established that "nine are two." Although it is so, in order to refute other tenets, it is also said that "nine are two," nine are only two, not like some say, and even bring scriptures to prove it in order to establish it, they are not uncontaminated. In which it is explained in detail, "For whom, these five faculties," etc. The saying "all is not all in all places" refers to all the forms of difference between small, medium, and large. "All" means that all five are non-existent. Because it says in the sutra, "I say that it abides in the side of the ordinary person."

In reality, it is said that whoever possesses these is a noble being. The teacher said that it is illogical to make these stainless. For example, when establishing a noble person, what does it mean to say "who has these faculties"? Monks, these five are the faculties. Which five? From the faculty of faith to the faculty of wisdom. These five faculties, being sharp and complete, are the Arhat. Those who are weaker and duller than that are non-returners. Those who are weaker and duller than that are once-returners. Those who are weaker and duller than that are stream-enterers. Those who are weaker and duller than that are those who follow the Dharma. Those who are weaker and duller than that are those who follow faith. Monks, in this way, relying on the perfection of the faculties and relying on the perfection of the powers, the perfection of the person is manifested. Whoever does not have these five faculties at all, I say that he dwells in the category of external ordinary people. The Blessed One, having thus established the noble person, said, "Who has these faculties." There is no contradiction for those who dwell in the category of external ordinary people to possess defiled dharmas such as faith. Or, there are two kinds of ordinary people, namely, insiders and outsiders. Those whose roots of virtue are not completely severed are insiders, because they are included in Buddhism. Those whose roots of virtue are completely severed are outsiders, because they are the opposite of that. It is for this very reason that they are specifically called outsiders. If it were not so, it would only be said, "I say that they dwell in the category of ordinary people." The sutra also says, again, not long after the Blessed One attained perfect enlightenment, he thought to himself: The profound Dharma that I have realized appears to be profound, difficult to see, difficult to realize, inconceivable, not the domain of speculation, subtle.
