One should not obviously rush to worldly fame; this should not be transgressed. For the sake of the ultimate, one should not analyze that names are empty. This is a concluding statement. Transgression and transcendence are the same. From the word "also" in "both also," it is known that even one can see. "It is not certain" means it is as clear as seeing when both eyes are open. If any one changes, then it is not. This refers to when any one of the open eyes and half-open eyes changes. If any one of the two changes, for example, if the open eye becomes half-open or completely closed, or if the half-open eye becomes completely closed or completely open, then at that time, one will not see two moons. Therefore, one should know that here, it is necessary to generate consciousness with both eyes. "Consciousness is like form because it exists on the object" is a counter-example. Just as form exists on the object, and because the basis is completely severed, it becomes completely severed, consciousness is not like that. Consciousness does not exist on the object. What is it then? Because it is not corporeal, it does not exist on the object. Because it does not exist on the object, it will not be completely severed even if the basis is completely severed. For example, seeing an object from afar, there is no eye faculty that apprehends it where the object appears, because it cannot be observed there by valid cognition, just as there is no Devadatta etc. there. Just as it is for the eye, it should also be said for the ear. Another says: The eye and ear are in contact with the direction of their own object, because they are faculties, like the nose faculty etc. This inference shows that that reason, namely, that it cannot be observed by valid cognition, is not established. The teacher elaborates, "If contact with the object were the only thing." If it is examined that the eye and ear are in contact with the object, then among people, for the meditators here, divine eyes and ears would not arise. If the eyes and ears could

According to the tenet systems, if extremely distant places, where forms and sounds are obstructed by walls and the like, can be apprehended, then it would be possible for this to become the nature of a divine realm. If that too is in contact with the place, it would not change, just like the nose and so on. For example, just as the nose and tongue, because they are in contact with the place, do not cause meditators to generate the purity of a divine realm, it is the same with this. This shows that one's own side's place is in contact with the aspect of the place, which is accompanied by the fault of excluding the distinction of the subject. The eye and ear could be divine eyes, which is the subject. It is not possible to be the nature of a divine realm, which is the exclusion from the distinction, because it would become that, so it is a fault. Because of this fault, it is not possible to infer, therefore it is established as not being an object of valid cognition. Therefore, the eye and ear are not in contact with the place. If it is said, "If it is not in contact with the place," then what extensively arises is that whether it is near, extremely far, or obstructed, it is the same as not being in contact, therefore it would be inferred as being able to see. Is this (view) of the opponent establishing or refuting? If, for the moment, it is said that the eye and ear will apprehend what is extremely far and obstructed, because it is not in contact with the place, just like a nearby place, if it is establishing, then it is not possible to establish, because for oneself, the reason is uncertain, and it contradicts the previous commitment. Or, if it is refuting that the nature of the eye and ear, as the subject, would be inferred as apprehending all non-contacting things, then it is not possible to refute, because it is harmed by inference. For example, someone might say, why doesn't a magnet attract all non-contacting iron? By way of generalization, using the magnet as an example, it is thereby established that the eye and ear do not apprehend non-contacting things. The eye and ear do not apprehend all non-contacting things, because they do not have the commonality of apprehending all non-contacting things, just like a magnet. A magnet apprehends non-contacting iron, that is, it attracts, although this is a synonym, it does not apprehend all non-contacting things.
