Just as a place that is obscured cannot be seen, when the eye encounters an object and is obstructed by obstacles such as walls, it cannot move forward. Therefore, is it the case that a place obscured by walls and the like cannot be perceived? That is not reasonable. If that were the case, one should not say that the eye does not see what is obscured because of the obstruction. Then, how can things separated by plums, thorns, glass, and water be seen? How can objects separated and obscured by plums, thorns, glass, and water be seen? Because there is an obstruction, just as being separated by walls and the like, if things separated by plums and the like cannot be seen by the eye, then it can only be seen from the perspective of established tenets. If there is no obstruction to appearance, then if appearance exists, the object will appear, and it is possible for consciousness to arise. The cause of consciousness is as follows: the eye faculty is not damaged, the object appears, and the attention arising from it is closely present. Therefore, the object obscured by plums and the like does not exist, and the consciousness of the eye arises. For those obscurations that are not the nature of plums and the like, but are obstructed by thick things like walls, it does not arise. What is it? It is the consciousness of the eye. Because it does not arise, the obscuration is not seen. You ask why it does not arise, and I say that this is the reason. Then, what does the "eye" that is extensively mentioned in the sutras refer to? It refers to the fact that after the eye sees various objects, it will not cling to the signs, nor will it cling to the manifest signs, which is extensively proclaimed. Because the eye sees, it is thought that a person sees with the eye. The teacher said that the intention there is to rely on this, and said "it is this." The intention there is to rely on the eye, which is the concluding remark after consciousness sees relying on the eye. How do you know? For example, it is said, "Consciousness distinguishes the objects of the mind." Mind

It is necessary to know by knowing through the manifestation of consciousness, but the immediately past mind cannot fully understand the dharmas, because it is acting in the present situation. Or, the function of relying is close to the support, that is, the function of relying on the manifestation of consciousness, seeing the support eye, is close. Because consciousness sees through the eye, it is close to saying that the eye sees. For example, it is like saying "call the chairs". For example, just like calling the people sitting on the chairs, it is close to saying "call the chairs". Just as the sutras describe in detail "what is to be known by the consciousness of the eye", the Vaibhashikas also believe that the eye cannot fully understand. So what is it? It is "consciousness understands". However, the sutras say "the beautiful form to be understood by the consciousness of the eye", there, without a doubt, it is saying that the function of relying is the support. This must be understood. It is also said that "form is the door to seeing", meaning that because it is like a door, it is a door, it is the cause and the support. This scripture is precisely to establish the view that through the door of the eye, consciousness sees, so it relies on it. There, saying "seeing is the door" ends, like the Brahmin saying "the eye is like this, it is the door to seeing form". The statement "the eye is the seeing that sees form" is not acceptable, because here, this statement is not acceptable, so it is thought. If it is said that "because of this seeing, it is seen", or that "because of seeing, it is the author", or that the entity is established "for the sake of seeing", but seeing is seeing, so how can it be "for that seeing"? Like this, there is no other seeing other than the eye. If it is thought that "it is seeing", then there is no other than consciousness, only consciousness is seeing, it has not been seen that there is another. If it is said that the eye is for seeing form,

If it is held that (eyes, etc.) are doors and holes for the purpose of cognition, that is acceptable. For example, some wisdom is also called 'seeing,' and is also called 'thoroughly knowing.' This approximate statement indicates that seeing and cognition are not different in essence. If someone asks, what is the difference in saying it that way? That is, what is said to be of the nature of seeing? Because it says in the scripture, 'Besides that, there are two kinds of superior wisdom.' And also in the scripture it says, 'Knowing it like that, seeing it like that.' Because it says 'some cognition,' it can also be said that not all cognition can see, such as eye consciousness can see, but ear consciousness, etc., cannot. If someone thinks, what else is there to be seen? Because there are things that can be objects, therefore that can be seen. If someone raises an objection, that is not allowed. In detail, even if cognition can cognize, but because cognition becomes the agent, it must be explained what other function cognition has, and this would similarly become an objection. To this, there is no difference between the agent and the action, meaning that there is no other difference in the nature of the agent cognition and the action cognition, but, cognition can cognize, so there is a connection between the agent and the action, and such words are also used. Similarly, here too it can be said that 'the eye sees,' so it is not allowed to raise an objection. Some others say that seeing is eye consciousness, because it is the basis of eye consciousness, so it is said 'seeing,' just as because it is the basis of the bell, it is said 'ringing the bell.' The so-called 'being the basis of cognition' means being the basis of eye consciousness. In the world, it is said that 'cognition is seeing,' meaning that in the world, it is said 'seeing,' but it is not said 'cognition.' How is it known? Therefore, it is not said 'when it arises, form is seen.'
