The word "together, also" indicates the third case. The fourth case is not indicated because it is easy to understand from the explanation. Or, the word "also," there are cases where it is neither separate nor together, this is also an explanation. Gradually obtaining the eye faculty in the desire realm means that beings in the desire realm gradually, either in stages such as Nur-nur-po, or in the order of death, obtain the eye faculty. With what is it associated? Is it only associated with the desire realm? The answer is: no, there is no difference, whether it is associated with the desire realm or with the form realm, it can be obtained. In the state of Nur-nur-po, etc., or similarly, when gradually dying and dying without eyes, one does not possess the eye element. Because in the state of Nur-nur-po, etc., or similarly, in the state of death, there is no eye element, so in the state of the arising of the six sense bases, or in the state of the intermediate state, at that time one obtains the eye element associated with it. It is not the case that one obtains possession of the eye consciousness element without having it. Like this, this is only associated with virtue, affliction, past, and future at the time of connecting the intermediate state body earlier. This should be regarded as the dominion of a special state, not the state of obtaining possession of what is obtained and possessed. The eye consciousness element and the detailed explanation of "and" etc. is that, having been born in the second dhyana etc., because there is no eye consciousness there, from the state of not having eye consciousness before, when the nature of the eye consciousness of the first dhyana ground, which is unobscured and unindicated, manifests, at that time one obtains possession of the eye consciousness element without having it. It is not the case that one obtains possession of the eye element without having it, because one possesses it as if it has already been obtained. When dying and transmigrating from those places to a lower birth, it means that when dying and transmigrating from the second dhyana etc. to a lower birth in the first dhyana and the desire realm, at the time of connecting the intermediate state body, one obtains possession of the eye consciousness element, which is virtuous and afflicted, and past and future, without having it. As for the eye element, it is not.

No. Because it is possessed as it has already been obtained. If it is said that there is also obtaining possessing both, this refers to when dying and transmigrating from the formless realm, because one did not previously possess the eye consciousness element, etc., in the intermediate state of existence, only at the moment of conception does the eye element manifestly arise, and one obtains possessing the virtuous and afflicted, past and future eye consciousness element, so intermediate beings are not without faculties. If it is said that there is what is not both, this refers to what is other than those forms, which is a synonym for saying other than the three forms of Dharma explained in the three alternatives. Dying and transmigrating from the formless realm and being born there, one does not possess both, nor does one obtain possessing. There, only not possessing exists, but there is no obtaining possessing. Being born in the second dhyana, etc., not manifesting eye consciousness, one also does not possess both, nor does one obtain possessing. If asked, how is it? Answer: Although one obtains possessing the eye element, one does not not possess the eye element. Although one does not possess the eye consciousness element, one does not obtain possessing, because it is not manifested. In the desire realm, if one dwells in a place possessing eyes and dies suddenly, in the intermediate state of existence at the moment of conception, one does not possess both, nor does one obtain possessing, because one possesses those. If asked, is whatever possesses the eye element also the eye consciousness element? This means that through this sutra, "either separately or together, there is also obtaining," this fourth alternative is also inferred. Obtaining is finding. Sometimes, from the perspective of what one wants to express, it is also called merely obtaining, so the first of the four alternatives is finding, and the second is merely obtaining. The first alternative is said, the detailed explanation is that being born in the second dhyana, etc., one is not without faculties, so one undoubtedly possesses the eye faculty, but one does not possess the eye consciousness element, because it does not exist there, and the eye consciousness of the first dhyana ground is not manifested. In the desire realm, not obtaining eyes or eyes being impaired, this refers to the situation where one has not obtained eyes or eyes have been impaired.
