It is like that. Then, what is widely recorded in the sutras as "What is the hardness and hardening of the eyeball?" is actually a synonym for "the aspect of hardness." Some might think, and therefore argue: The eye faculty is essentially hard. The meaning of "It merely refers to the lump of flesh that is no different from this" is that it merely refers to the support that is no different from the eye faculty. The support of the eye can also be called the eye. Therefore, it is called a lump of flesh. If it were not so, if it were thought to be merely the faculty, then only "eye" would be said. "This person is the sixth realm" is widely recorded in the entrance to the womb, or in states such as wriggling. In order to dispel the doubt that "it is merely arising, not transformed by arising," it is said, "to show the basis of sentient beings' substance." That is, to truly show the basis of sentient beings' substance. The four, earth and so on, are the basis of sentient beings, because from these arise the five sense-spheres of touch. The mind realm is also the basis of mind, because from this arises the sense-sphere of mental consciousness. On the other hand, the four, the earth realm and so on, are the support of form that is caused, and the realm of consciousness is also the support of the phenomena arising from the mind. Therefore, they are the basis of sentient beings. How is it known? Because the sutra also says "six spheres of contact," that is, in the same sutra it is later said, "There are six spheres of contact, from the sphere of eye contact to the sphere of mind contact." Therefore, the Buddha said, "Bhikkhu, this person is the sixth realm," in order to truly show the basis of sentient beings' substance, not in order to merely abide in arising. It should be understood in this way. Just as the realm of consciousness and the realm of mind are not different entities, but the sphere of mind is still mentioned, the eye and so on are not different entities from the four realms, but are still mentioned again.

Is it so? Therefore, since the source of touch has been mentioned, is it not established that something that has changed from the elements exists separately? It is not so. If only the earth element and so on were the sources of touch, then only their own sources of touch would be mentioned, but it is not so. What is it then? It is said to be from the source of eye touch to the source of mind touch. Therefore, it should be known that there are eyes and so on, apart from the earth element and so on. The realm of consciousness is only mentioned in passing when mentioning the source of touch of the eyes and so on. What is the meaning of the source of touch? It is the definition of 'that which arises from the mind and is relied upon.' The reason for saying 'mental events will become non-existent' is that if it is said that 'this monk is the sixth element,' then only the substances are grasped literally, and not other substances that depend on it. Therefore, since only the realm of consciousness is mentioned here, the mental events that depend on it are not included, and this will become a problem. If it is said that there is no fault because of intention? It is not so, because this view is faulty. The view that mental events are only the characteristics of the mind is faulty because it contradicts one's own tenets. Therefore, it is also unreasonable to assert that the mind itself is the mental events. Why? Because the sutra says, 'This dharma of perception and thought arises from the mind and depends on the mind.' Here, there is also proof: perception and feeling are different things from the mind, because they are shown separately, like the form aggregate. In another way, perception and feeling are different things from their own basis, because they depend on it. Whatever depends on its own basis is different from its own basis, like a painting that depends on a wall. Because the mind arises with desire and so on.

That which is called "stained" means that with a mind of desire, one truly knows that a mind of desire is indeed a mind of desire. One truly knows that a mind without desire is indeed a mind without desire. One truly knows that a mind with hatred is indeed a mind with hatred. This is a broad explanation. Here, the argument is that the term "mind with desire" indicates that the mind and desire are mutually distinct in meaning. It is like saying "a black person with a son," where they appear together to indicate a certain meaning. "The ten with form are accumulated." This means that only these ten are the essence of accumulated minute particles. By determining this, it is established that other elements are not accumulated. "External is the four elements." This refers to form and so on, excluding sound. Regarding "axe and wood, etc.," the axe and so on are what can cut, while the wood and so on are what can be cut. Because of existence, it is said that way. Sometimes, the axe and so on can also be what is cut. "Arising in connection" is explained extensively as follows: arising in connection here refers to the state of arising without separation, thus it is a continuous connection of aggregation. That is to say, form and so on are a continuous aggregation. What is it that separates and generates them? It is what separates and generates them, and that is cutting. Even though momentary things perish without an axe, etc., the continuous cessation is caused by the axe and so on, so it is said that the axe and so on can cut. This is because the difference in the collection of causes brings about the difference in the result. Therefore, it is determined that only these four elements are what can cut and what can be cut. Having determined this, it is established that the other elements are neither of the two. Precisely for this reason, it is extensively mentioned that the bodily faculties, etc., are not what can be cut. Here, it should be said, regarding the eye faculty, etc.
