Why is that? Therefore it is said, like this, these six elements are considered to be the basis of birth. Bhikshu, this person is a six-element being, and because it is said that relying on the six elements, a son enters the mother's womb. Those are born from the mind of connection to the mind of death, thus extensively speaking, those are the cause of producing birth, nurturing, and increasing, they are the basis. Among these, what produces is the consciousness element, it is the seed of connection. What nurtures are the great elements, because it is its basis. What increases is the space element, because it opens up. Therefore, these are called elements. Because they hold the connection, they are elements. The undefiled dharmas are not like that, because they contradict birth, they are not the basis of birth. "What is manifest here is only form," what does this mean? What kind of difference must be possessed for a thing to be shown in that way, that difference is called manifestation. Or, what produces another's eye consciousness with words is manifestation, and what enters together with it is manifest, it is only the form element. Here, among the eighteen elements, only the form element can be shown, because it is specifically designated. The rest cannot be shown, it will be said. By the manifest itself, it is also said to be the main thing, it is not the fault of repetition, because that is established. These differences such as the manifest itself are also mostly what is said in the sutras, so they are well shown.\ Like this, in the sutra it says: Bhikshu, the eye is the internal source of birth, the four great elements are the cause, it is form, has form, is invisible, and has obstruction. From "Bhikshu, the body is the internal source of birth" to there, it is the same as before. Bhikshu, the mind is the internal source of birth, it is formless, invisible, and without obstruction. Bhikshu, the forms are

is an external source, with the four great elements as its cause, being form, visible, and obstructive. Bhikshus, sound is an external source, with these four great elements as its cause, being form, invisible, and obstructive. And so on, Bhikshus, touch is an external source, with the four great elements and the four great elements as its cause, being formless, invisible, and obstructive. Bhikshus, all sources are external sources, not included in the eleven sources, being invisible and non-obstructive. Thus it is said, these also only up to the completion of the first chapter of the Abhidharmakośa, show only the distinctions of the elements, because they are the distinctions of form and consciousness. The ten obstructive forms. Saying form is to exclude the formless. Form is that which can be changed, because these have it, they are forms. Ten refers only to the five elements such as the eye element, and the five elements of their objects. How is the dharma element established? Because there is non-manifest form in it, can it also be said to be form? Answer: Because it is necessary to definitely grasp form, therefore it is established in this way, whatever element whose nature is form, that alone should be grasped. The dharma element is both the nature of form and the nature of the formless. Obstructing the arising of others in one's own realm, this is extensively explained, that is, where there is an obstructive object, a second form object will not arise. For example, a hand or a stone, the hand touches and obstructs, in the place of the hand or the place of the stone, a hand will not arise, or a stone, for those two, a stone will not arise in the place of the hand and the stone. Water and so on refers to entering one's own realm, that is, a synonym for water. Saying that most people are like this, saying most is to exclude fishermen and so on. There are also cases where it is neither, such as those who are certain to die in the womb.

That which is called "those vowels" is a synonym for "those forms." "Phabang" refers to the mouth and buttocks. The "etc." mentioned in "cats etc." includes robbers and people like that, and tigers etc. That which acts upon something is its object, meaning that action is ability, such as the eyes and ears etc. seeing forms and sounds etc., and hearing etc., is action. Moreover, know that it is the characteristic of the difference in the power of the nature of the support for one's own mind and mental events. Whatever form etc. is held by the mind and mental events as the way of relying on something, that is the object. Thus, the object is only of the mind and mental events, but the object is not only of the mind and mental events, but also includes the eyes etc. "Because it does not enter into others" means that whatever in the world does not enter into anything other than wood or a wall, that is an obstacle to it. Similarly, the eyes etc. also do not act on other objects, but only act on their own objects. Therefore, that is an obstacle to it. Or, pointing to this is an obstacle, meaning that broadly speaking, pointing to this object is pointing. "What is entering into one's own object" means a synonym for "action." Therefore, the ten are obstructed by obscuration, meaning that broadly speaking, "the ten form aggregates with obstruction." Here, these ten realms are considered to be obstructed by obscuration, so they are with obstruction. For this, the mind and mental events are also the nature of being obstructed by the obstruction of objects and objects of focus, so they are fourfold, and fourfold is a synonym for four forms. "Combining with the later words" means that if one grasps the later part of the question to answer, that is combining with the later words. If one grasps the former part to answer, that is combining with the former words. "Those are also obstructed by objects" means the mind and mental events, those are obstructed by objects and obstructed by objects of focus, so they are with obstruction. The five faculties are objects of focus.
