And it is impossible to be completely purified anywhere. Therefore, since afflictions arise in mutual opposition, they are virtuous in relation to other ways of arising, so there is no fault because the sutras speak with regard to heaviness and lightness. The example here is like joy and so on. Therefore, this is because the Blessed One has shown only equanimity as the basis for abandonment, because he said, "Monks, there are two kinds of equanimity," and so on. If someone asks: Are not the thirty-six teachings that are taught by the distinction of relying on attachment and relying on renunciation, have not these been established as both pervasive afflictions and purification? Answer: In order to conform to the tenets of the distinction speakers, there is no fault. According to the teacher's view, there are also mental pleasures and so on other than the mental near-going. The so-called mental pleasures and so on, in detail, some of the eighteen mental near-goings are dependent on attachment, that is, dependent on manifest attachment. Some are dependent on renunciation itself, and the nature of renunciation is renunciation, that is, renunciation from pervasive afflictions or the suffering of samsara. By the distinction of relying on attachment and relying on renunciation, eighteen times two, there are thirty-six teachings. Because the Buddha has taught and explained that these distinctions, that is, the distinctions of these mental near-goings, show two different ways, so it is as it says in the sutras. The previously mentioned dependent origination, if briefly summarized, is afflictions, karma, and foundations, etc., because the sutras say that there are three afflictions, two karmas, and seven foundations. For all karmas as well, the so-called "thus" means that all karmas are also the proximate cause of producing ripening, and should be understood in conjunction with the context. Afflictions are also the cause of ripening, but that is a distant cause. These have been explained, the so-called "Here, between death and birth, it occurs in existence," and so on.
