And also equanimity. The four afflictions included in the approximation of equanimity are all possessed, as well as the six objects of desire realm that are the near-practice of equanimity, and those that are the objects of one's own ground are also possessed. What about those born from the second dhyana, the third, the fourth, and the formless realm, being the same as before? How is it? That which is born in the desire realm, having obtained the virtuous mind that practices in the form realm, and not being separated from desire, is the ground of the second dhyana, possessing only eight afflictions, except for those that focus on smell and taste. Which ones do those who have not attained possess? The ground of the third and fourth dhyanas possesses only four, except for those that focus on smell and taste. Those who practice in the formless realm possess only one affliction. In this way, by this path, the rest should also be understood. How so? One born in the first dhyana, not having attained the virtuous mind of the ground of the second dhyana, possesses all of the ground of the first dhyana. The ground of the second dhyana possesses eight afflictions. The third dhyana, the fourth, and those born from the formless realm are the same as before.

Those born from non-existence are also like the previous ones. This is a category; this category refers to the equanimity of those born in the third and fourth dhyanas, whether self-born or from higher realms, whose near-conduct is afflicted, and those that do not correspond to virtuous dharmas should also be applied as appropriate. The so-called near-conduct of equanimity dharma is because the mind of emanation that operates in the desire realm corresponds to equanimity. Others say that this refers to the author of this treatise himself. If someone is free from attachment to something, then it is not reasonable to engage in near-conduct with that object. This extensive explanation means that if there is a person who is free from attachment to form, etc., then they should not engage in near-conduct with that object of form, etc. How does one engage in near-conduct? One may still be attached to it, still be angry with it, or even be indifferent without attention. When one is attentive and indifferent, then one is not abandoning, so it is virtuous. Therefore, it is specifically said to be without attention. Thus, pleasures, etc., that are with outflows are not all near-conduct. What are they then? They are those that are completely afflicted, those that are in accordance with complete affliction, that is, those pleasures, etc., that engage in near-conduct with mental objects. Those whose antidotes are always present are called the six abidings, referring to those antidotes to complete afflictions that are constantly arising, that is, they are always present, abiding, and making distinctions of yoga, and these are also six. How so? It is explained that after the eye sees forms, the mind does not rejoice.

From "knowing dharmas with consciousness" to "between" refers to the six that are constantly present through six different realms. The statement "even an Arhat does not not have it" means that an Arhat focuses on worldly virtues, defiled dharmas, that is, focuses on the six sense spheres, or has the pleasure of consciousness that focuses on the dharmas of realization. When he manifests the qualities inherent in the Buddha's lineage, the pleasure of consciousness generates virtue, so this should not be a refutation. So, what is it? It is evident that this is a refutation of the mind's close activity that is completely afflicted. Therefore, it should be said that all defiled things such as the pleasure of consciousness are not close activity. To this, the venerable Gocha Thayé (Gochamthayé) says: That is not reasonable. Why? Because it is taught differently in the sutras. The Blessed One did not say in the sutras that only completely afflicted things are the close activity of consciousness, but said this: Bhikshus, rely on and abide in those six close activities of pleasure of consciousness, and abandon those six close activities of displeasure of consciousness. Bhikshus, rely on and abide in those six close activities of equanimity, and abandon those six close activities of pleasure of consciousness. Bhikshus, equanimity is of two kinds: that which relies on difference and that which relies on oneness. Bhikshus, rely on and abide in that equanimity which relies on oneness, and
