The seventh (section). "All in the desire realm are self-referential," which means that in the desire realm, the mind's proximate activity, all eighteen (mental factors) that operate in the desire realm are present, and the object of all of them is also the desire realm itself. The words in verse form are, because the object of these is their own realm, they are called "self-referential," which is the separate combination of words. "The sphere of activity is twelvefold with form," which means that the form realm is the sphere of activity of the twelve proximate activities that operate in the desire realm. "Except for the six that operate on smell and taste," which means except for the two pleasant proximate activities that focus on smell and taste, and the two unpleasant proximate activities that focus only on them, and the two neutral proximate activities that focus only on them. What is the reason for this? Because it says (in the scriptures), "Except for the realms of smell and taste, and nose and tongue consciousness," therefore the form realm does not have these two, smell and taste. "The three upper realms," which means that the upper realms are the objects of the three dharma-objects of pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral feeling that operate in the desire realm, because there are no forms, etc., there. "In the second dhyana, there are twelve," which means because there are no six unpleasant proximate activities. "Self-referential, there are eight," which means there are eight objects. "Except for the four that operate on smell and taste," which means except for the pleasant and neutral proximate activities, the two that focus on smell and the two that focus on taste, this is a summary statement, because those two are not there. "Of the two formless realms," which means that the formless realm is the object of the pleasant and neutral dharma-objects of the first and second dhyana grounds, because there are no forms, etc. "Only the six neutral proximate activities exist," which means that only the neutral proximate activities exist, those that focus on form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma. The third and fourth dhyanas are because there are also no pleasant proximate activities. There, smell
