It transforms. For example, if the eye exists, then the consciousness of the eye arises. This is not necessarily understood as only the eye exists. Therefore, it is similar to saying that if form exists, then consciousness arises. 'This arises because of this arising.' This second mode determines that only this arises, and this arises, not from anything else, thus determining the first mode. In order to show the continuity of the limbs. It means that if this limb exists, that is, the limb of ignorance, then this limb arises, that is, the limb of action. This limb, that is, the limb of action, arises, then this limb of consciousness arises. Other limbs should also be stated in the same way in succession. Or, what does 'life in succession' mean? It is connected to 'two modes are spoken in order to show.' Manifestation and detailed explanation are that in order to show the nature of the cause of manifestation and continuity of ignorance and so on, two modes are spoken. 'This exists, therefore this arises' shows the nature of the cause of manifestation. 'This arises, therefore this arises' is continuity. Among them, manifestation is when afflicted action arises immediately after ignorance. Continuity is when virtue arises, because there is no ignorance in the state of virtue. Furthermore, ignorance is the cause of manifestation of actions and so on, while consciousness and so on are the cause of continuity. It is said that because the limb of ignorance exists, the limb of action arises, and because this limb of action arises, the consciousness of the cause of continuous ignorance arises. All of these are the treatises of the teacher. Others say, 'In order to refute,' this is said by Sthavira Dharmapala. 'Without a cause, things do not arise.' This first mode refutes those who say there is no cause. Nature and the self, etc., which are unborn and possess permanence, even a small thing does not arise from them. This is the second mode. The teacher, for this kind of reflection, then extensively

Furthermore, the previous statement becomes meaningless, which is to say, this statement of "if this exists, this will arise." In order to establish the refutation of both statements, it is only through this category of "this arises, therefore this arises" that one can refute the two characteristics of asserting the existence of a cause and being a cause that possesses arising, as well as asserting the absence of a cause and the permanence of a cause. Therefore, the previous category becomes meaningless. So, what some people say in detail is that some opponents think that the self becomes the basis of dependence, that is, the basis of dependence of ignorance exists, so actions and so on, that is, actions and consciousness, and name and form and so on arise and are born, and they think that ignorance and so on, that is, ignorance and actions and so on arise, so those arise, which is related to the context. Because of that reason, in order to eliminate and refute the ideas of those statements, this practice must be adopted, that is, a refutation is carried out. How is it done? From "if what arises" to "this great mass of suffering will completely arise" is said. If what arises, what will arise, is because that itself exists, so that arises, not because another self exists, for example, with ignorance as the condition,

If it is true that actions and so on arise from ignorance and so on, then it will be thought that it is because there is a self as a support. Therefore, whatever arises, only that which arises exists, and it will arise, not because there is another self as a support. Therefore, it is made to hold firmly in two ways. The so-called "teachers" are the former teachers. It is to show that it has not been abandoned, and to show that it will arise. If ignorance has not been abandoned and exists, then actions and so on will not be abandoned and will arise, which is shown in the first way. The so-called "because that arises, this will arise" is shown in the second way. If birth has not been abandoned and exists, then old age and death and so on will not be abandoned and will arise, and it is the same until "because that arises, those will arise." Others say that it is to correctly show existence and arising. The so-called "say" refers to the venerable Palena, who said that the two ways were spoken for that reason. The continuum of cause is that as long as the cause exists, the continuum of effect will arise, which is the first way. Because this cause arises, the effect will arise, which is the second way. It is because of making the freedom of arising. The so-called "is" refers to the fact that when the Blessed One said, "Monks, I will explain dependent origination to you," if there is any fault in falling into the words of existence, then what will happen? If it is said, "Because this exists, this arises," then this shows that as long as the continuum of cause exists, the continuum of effect will exist, so this is how the meaning of this existence is spoken. Why would the Blessed One speak in a different order? Arising is the first, and existence is the later, because existence depends on arising. It should have been said earlier, "Because this arises, this arises," and later, "Because this exists, this arises," but that is not the case, so its meaning is not like that. The so-called "again said" refers to the venerable Palena. The teacher said again: If the meaning of the sutra is like that, then "because this exists, this does not arise" will appear in detail.
