It is shown that it means "to pay attention." Since it can be established only by mentioning "grasping," it is not necessary to say that it is another limb. If that is the case, then craving and ignorance are also included in "grasping," and since these two are also included in it, they should not be made other limbs, but included in "grasping," because it can be established only by mentioning "grasping." Craving and ignorance are also separately explained as limbs, so they cannot be included in "grasping." Some say that this refers to the venerable Dpal len. Other sutras say that the cause of ignorance is inappropriate attention, which means that in the Sutra with Cause, Condition, and Basis, the Blessed One said, 'Monks, ignorance also has a cause, condition, and basis.' There is a detailed explanation. What is said here is that inappropriate attention is also shown at the time of contact. For example, the sutra says, 'Depending on the eye and forms, the attention born of delusion will produce confusion.' What is said here is that the moment when eye consciousness arises is the moment of contact. Confused attention, is it because of inappropriateness? Or is it because it is born of delusion? Born of delusion is born of delusion. Feeling born of ignorance and contact means that which is born of contact corresponding to ignorance is the feeling born of ignorance and contact. Whoever has the feeling born of ignorance and contact

Since the nature of the cause of ignorance arises together with samsara, other limbs besides the twelve links cannot supplement it either. Nor would it become the fault of being without limit, because the attention that arises from delusion is called contaminated, so it is said that inappropriate attention also arises from delusion. Therefore, from inappropriate attention also arises ignorance, and from ignorance also arises inappropriate attention, thus it is taught like a cycle. This is because the teacher, having seen the fault, extensively stated "if that is so" in order to manifest that fault by beginning to elaborate on the fault. The term "if that is so" is intended to express another meaning. Those with excellent fortune say that "now it is" is the meaning. The term "that is" is from the perspective of sutra and reasoning, the cause of ignorance is inappropriate attention, as has been extensively explained. Because that is taught in other sutras, it must also be stated in this sutra of dependent origination. Saying that it is not necessary to state is the monk Śrīpāla. When asked by what reasoning, the monk Śrīpāla extensively stated that the feelings of the arhats, without ignorance, are not the cause of craving. Arhats also have feelings, but that is not the cause of craving either, so it should be known that only feelings accompanied by ignorance are the cause of craving. Contact without perversion is also not the cause of afflicted feelings, it should be connected with the context. The contact of arhats without ignorance is also not perverse, that is to say, from the contact that is taught as the cause of feeling in the sutra of dependent origination, it should be known that only contact accompanied by ignorance is the cause, and it should also be known that ignorance is also its cause. With this reasoning, what arises from the sutra of dependent origination is that contact is the cause accompanied by ignorance, feeling is the result of contact. Feeling is the cause accompanied by ignorance, craving is the result of feeling. Therefore, it should be known that the reasoning as previously stated is like that.

Also, it is taught at the time of contact, therefore, here in elaborating on dependent origination, the cause of ignorance is improper attention, which is established. Here is a refutation: if feeling is without ignorance, it is not the cause of craving, etc. With words like these, one knows from one's own reasoning alone that the cause of ignorance is also improper attention, and the cause of improper attention is also ignorance. Then, since ignorance and improper attention are mutually causal, why is it necessary to rely on other sutras to fully demonstrate this? Here it is said: That is true, but that is only reasoning. It is not what the Buddha himself said in the Sutra on Dependent Origination. Therefore, it is necessary to understand that it is another necessity to cite other sutras, since this reasoning is established from the perspective of what the Buddha himself said in other sutras. If that is the case, it would be too extreme, says the author of the treatise. How would it be too extreme? It is explained: Other sutras teach that craving arises from reliance on the feeling that arises from contact, which is gathered by ignorance. The feeling of the Arhats, which is without ignorance, is not the cause of craving. Contact without perversion is also not the cause of afflicted feeling, and the contact of the Arhats without ignorance is also not perverted. With this reasoning, these two limbs, contact and feeling, will also be known because they are taught from other sutras, just as they are not mentioned in this Sutra on Dependent Origination, and these two limbs will also not be mentioned. Similarly, other sutras teach that if virtuous formations manifestly create, they will become consciousness that approaches merit, and approaching non-merit and approaching immovability are also the same. The formations of the Arhats, which are without ignorance, will not change from consciousness that approaches merit to consciousness that approaches immovability, so this limb of formations is also established by reasoning, and it will become unnecessary to say it here. Like that
