The reason for saying that it is the nature of affliction is that ignorance, craving, and grasping are all of the nature of affliction. Formation and existence are the nature of karma. The so-called five bases are consciousness, name and form, the six sense sources, contact, and feeling. The reason for saying that the two kinds of afflictions are distinct is craving and grasping. In the future, the reason for saying that the two distinct fruits are brief is birth and old age and death. In the past, the reason for saying that showing affliction through one door is a brief cause is because it is shown through the door of affliction, ignorance. This is a concluding statement. In the future, it will not be expanded into five kinds of fruits, and in the past, it will not be expanded into two kinds of causes. What has the Blessed One already taught here? "Affliction arises from affliction." Like that and so on. "This is the system of the limbs of existence." That is the meaning. The so-called "base arises from that" means from that action. The so-called "base and affliction arise from that" is spoken in the sense of "arising from the base." Here, the word "arising" is something that comes out from within, like "if that is the case." It means that it has been shown that it arises from the base or from affliction. This is because here also it is seen that affliction arises from the base, that is, craving arises from feeling. Similarly, it is also seen that affliction arises from affliction, that is, grasping arises from craving. Because it is also said that ignorance is the nature of all past afflictions, it should be known that if it is grasping, then it arises from existence; if it is craving, then it should be known that it arises from the base. Therefore, it has been shown that ignorance is the nature of affliction, arising from the base or from affliction. It is also said that old age and death are the basis of the nature of the four limbs. Here also it is seen that affliction arises from the base, that is, craving arises from the condition of feeling. Therefore, it has been shown that affliction arises and will arise from that, so it is this again.

There is nothing to add, because it has already been explained in this way. If asked, how did the Blessed One explain this principle? The answer is: Because the Blessed One said, "In this way, this great mass of suffering will be completely produced." If it were not so, what would be the use of this? If it were not as previously stated: "From affliction arises affliction, from action arises the basis, from the basis and affliction arises," but only said, "Conditioned by ignorance, there is action," and so on, until "Conditioned by birth, there is old age and death, as well as sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and vexation arise," then it would only be said up to this point. In that case, it would not be said that "this great mass of suffering will be completely produced." Complete production and production are not different in meaning, therefore, it is clear that its function is to manifest the state mentioned earlier. Some say that the "some say" mentioned here refers to the learned Khenpo, namely, the steadfast Vasubandhu. The sutra says that ignorance also arises from the cause of improper attention, which comes from the sutra with cause, condition, and basis. How to understand it? The sutra says: "Monks, ignorance has a cause, a condition, and a basis. Monks, what is the cause of ignorance? What is the condition? What is the basis? Monks, improper attention is the cause of ignorance, improper attention is the condition, improper attention is the basis." Therefore, it is said in this way. Twenty-fifth chapter. The sutra says that improper attention also arises from the cause of ignorance, and the "sutra says" mentioned here is combined with the context. The sutra says: "Relying on the eye and form, the attention arising from delusion will produce confusion." Why is it not mentioned here? How can it not become other limbs? Because it is also accepted here.

It is said because it is included in grasping. The so-called "that" refers to disturbing attention. "This" refers to the Sutra of Dependent Arising. How is it said? It is said because it is included in grasping. Thus, grasping is the stage of universally employing afflictions in order to obtain enjoyment, and within it is also included the creation of inverted thinking, which is non-virtuous attention. Therefore, ignorance is not without a cause. Among the twelve limbs of ignorance, it is not necessary to supplement with other limbs. Since non-virtuous attention is the cause of ignorance, it will not be excessively limitless. The teacher explained in detail how it is included: How is non-virtuous attention included in grasping? Non-virtuous attention is not the nature of grasping. If it comes from existing in the same way, if non-virtuous attention exists in the same way as grasping, therefore it is considered to be included in grasping, then the limb of dependent arising, attachment and ignorance, non-virtuous attention will also be included in it, because it will also exist in the same way as existence and ignorance. Therefore, it should be said: That is also included here in ignorance, attachment, and grasping, and it should not be said: That is also included here in grasping, it should not be determined that it is only included in grasping, that is what is thought. Even if it is allowed to be included, this is admitting that it is impossible to be included and saying it. How is it said that the cause of ignorance is non-virtuous attention? Because there is no such sutra text. If it appears in detail only because it is included, then if non-virtuous attention is included in grasping, therefore the cause of ignorance is non-virtuous.
