If so, then in the formless realms also it would be said in the same way, because there it is in order to completely pass beyond sorrow within the limit of life. But that is not the case, therefore the meaning of the sutra is not "within the limit of life" and so on. Furthermore, if it is asked why it is not clearly stated in the formless realms that one completely passes beyond sorrow in the intermediate state, therefore it is said: "The dhyanas etc. have four sets." This means that it is explained in detail, with the four dhyanas explaining the meaning of the sutra in four sets, from the first dhyana one set to the fourth dhyana one set. "The formless ones have three sets." This means that with the birthplaces of space, consciousness, and nothingness, because there is no intermediate existence in those three, and because there is no birthplace, therefore there are no two, so there are three sets. In the birthplaces of non-perception and neither non-perception nor non-non-perception, it is those three themselves, and because there is no upward transfer, there are six sets, so the groups are correctly assembled, which is the meaning of "expansion." How is it? For example, here, what kind of monk, with what kind of signs, what kind of characteristics, secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, possessing investigation, possessing analysis, born from seclusion, possessing joy and bliss, having perfected the first dhyana, dwells, he does not remember those forms, those signs, and those characteristics, however, what is that? He considers those dharmas of the form of the object, or the form of feeling, or the form of perception as disease, as abscess, as a wound, as sin, as impermanent, as suffering, as empty, as selfless. He considers those dharmas as disease, until he considers them as selfless, thereby he generates aversion to those dharmas, generates fear, generates turning back. Having generated aversion to those dharmas, generated fear, generated turning back, like this: completely abandoning all aggregates, craving is exhausted, dispassion, the cessation of nirvana is peaceful, this is excellent, thus he directs himself to the state of nectar. And, having spoken that sutra, the difference is

That is, knowing thus and seeing thus, his mind is liberated from the outflows of desire, and his mind is liberated from the outflows of existence and the outflows of ignorance. When liberated, the knowledge and vision arise that 'I am liberated,' saying, 'My birth is exhausted, the holy life is lived, what had to be done is done, I know of no further existence beyond this.' Again, reciting that sutra, but not liberated, yet by that very desire for the Dharma, that very attachment to the Dharma, that very delight in the Dharma, that very extreme delight in the Dharma, one will attain complete Nirvana in the intermediate state. Not attaining complete Nirvana in the intermediate state, but being born, one will attain complete Nirvana. Even being born, one will not attain complete Nirvana, but without effort, one will attain complete Nirvana. Not attaining complete Nirvana without effort, but with effort, one will attain complete Nirvana. Not attaining complete Nirvana with effort, but one will ascend to a higher realm. Not ascending to a higher realm, but by that very desire for the Dharma, that very attachment to the Dharma, that very delight in the Dharma, that very extreme delight in the Dharma, one will be born sharing the lot of the Great Brahma gods. Not being born sharing the lot of the Great Brahma gods, but by that very desire for the Dharma, as before, up to that very extreme delight in the Dharma, one will be born sharing the lot of the Brahma's attendant gods. Not being born sharing the lot of the Great Brahma's attendant gods, but by that very desire for the Dharma, up to that very extreme delight in the Dharma, one will be born sharing the lot of the Brahma host gods. Being of one mind, without discrimination or observation, with joy and bliss born of samadhi, having perfected and abided in the second dhyana, one does not attend to those aspects, those signs, and those characteristics. However, all the texts from "focusing on that very thing" to "freedom from desire, cessation of suffering, nirvana" are as before. Having spoken this sutra, knowing and seeing thus, one is liberated from the leakage of desire, from the leakage of existence and the leakage of ignorance, from "what needs to be done has been done, there is no further existence" to the end, as before. Twenty-fourth fascicle. Having spoken this sutra, although not completely liberated, from the desire for the Dharma to the extreme joy in the Dharma, one will be born together with the gods of radiant light. One will not be born together with the gods of radiant light, but from the desire for the Dharma to the extreme joy in the Dharma, one will be born together with the gods of immeasurable light. One will not be born together with the gods of immeasurable light, but as before, from the desire for the Dharma to the extreme joy in the Dharma, one will be born together with the gods of lesser light. Here, with what aspects, what signs, what characteristics do the monks, being free from the desire for joy, abide in equanimity, being mindful and fully aware, experiencing happiness with the body, which the noble ones call abiding in mindfulness, abiding in happiness. Having perfected and abided in the third dhyana, which is without joy, one does not attend to those aspects, those signs, and those characteristics. All of this sutra is as before. Only those of the same kind have differences; one will not be transferred upwards, but as before, from the desire for the Dharma to the extreme joy in the Dharma, one will be born together with the gods of abundant virtue. One will not be born together with the gods of abundant virtue, but...
