That which is called "pleasant feeling" refers to the realm of the third dhyana. That which is called "causing the mind to waver" refers to causing the mind to be agitated. That which is called "knowing coming and not coming" refers to the fact that those who are newly born know it as coming, while those who are old know it as not coming. That which is called "knowing fear and not fear" refers to, in order, those who are newly born and those who are old, thus they are different knowings. It is not like what the Vaibhashikas say, knowing it as pleasant feeling and neither pleasant nor unpleasant feeling. In the first dhyana, that which is called "it is a defiled knowing" refers to being in accordance with holding vows and asceticism as supreme, because of clinging to what is not a cause as a cause. In the second dhyana, that which is called "it is a virtuous knowing" refers to being encompassed by the preparatory stage and the actual stage. In the third dhyana, that which is called "it is a knowing born from maturation" refers to being in accordance with the pleasant feeling born from maturation. In the three formless realms, as it is said in the sutra, it refers to those non-form sentient beings who have completely transcended the perceptions of form in every way, thinking "space is infinite," and abiding having perfected the sphere of infinite space, such as the gods who approach the sphere of infinite space. This is the fifth abode of consciousness. Those non-form sentient beings who have completely transcended the sphere of infinite space in every way, thinking "consciousness is infinite," and abiding having perfected the sphere of infinite consciousness, such as the gods who approach the sphere of infinite consciousness. This is the sixth abode of consciousness. Those non-form sentient beings who have completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness in every way, thinking "there is nothing at all," and abiding having perfected the sphere of nothingness, such as the gods who approach the sphere of nothingness. This is the consciousness

It is said that the seventh is the abode. As it is said, according to circumstances, the aggregates five and four that possess these, those possessing the sphere of infinite space, etc., are the aggregates four. Those possessing others are the aggregates five. The remaining one is called possessing the destroyer, because it completely destroys through this, therefore it is the destroyer. That which completely destroys consciousness is its destroyer. Because it exists in this, therefore it possesses its destroyer. Twenty-third fascicle. The remainder are the evil destinies, etc. It is said that in the evil destinies, neither exists, which means that those dwelling here also do not have the desire to go, and those dwelling there also do not have the desire not to move. Because the movement is not clear, which means that because the movement of mind and mental factors is weak here, it is not reasonable to say that consciousness, possessing strength, abides. The peak of existence and the non-perceptual beings, are said to be the nine abodes of beings. It is said that the sutra speaks of the nine abodes of beings, what are the nine? Some beings have form, with different bodies and different perceptions, such as humans and some gods. This is the first abode of beings. The second, third, and fourth should also be spoken of as before, as the abodes of consciousness. The difference is that some beings have form, without perception and without separate perception, such as the gods of the non-perceptual realm. This is the fifth abode of beings. From the abodes of formless beings, three abodes of consciousness should also be spoken of. The fourth formless abode is that, for non-form beings, they have completely transcended the sphere of nothingness in all respects, perfected the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and abide. For example, those gods who approach the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. This is the ninth abode of beings. Those other beings who approach the fourth dhyana, other than the non-perceptual beings, are they the abodes of beings? Or are they not?

If so, the master Āryadeva says it is not so. Why does the master say this, what others? Saying hells etc., this is just the beginning. Those not included by the approaching non-perceptual beings in the fourth dhyāna should also be mentioned. The reason here is that whatever is said to be the abode of consciousness should be said. The beings dwelling here do not consider going to the evil realms as meaningful, and the beings dwelling there do not go to dwell, so those are not the abodes of sentient beings. Among those not included by the great fruit non-perceptual beings, although the beings dwelling here consider going there as meaningful, the individual beings there want to enter non-perception. The noble ones refer to the beings dwelling in places like cloudless and merit-born who also want to enter the Pure Abodes and the Formless Realm. The Pure Abodes also want to be completely liberated from suffering, so those do not have the thought of dwelling there. Therefore, those are not the abodes of sentient beings, they say. Others say, what others? Saying hells etc., because they only think of hells etc., the master thinks that cloudless etc. are the abodes of sentient beings, they say. Those people need to find reasons. Like a prison, because it is like dwelling unwillingly, prisons are not the abodes of sentient beings, hells etc. are the same as that. The meaning of abode of consciousness is that because consciousness dwells here, it is the abode of consciousness. Because of approaching, it is approaching, meaning acting close to consciousness. That is form, and it is also approaching, so it is approaching form, similarly, those may also reach between the formations, so it is approaching formations. The distinguished one says, from the abode of consciousness approaching form to approaching formations, is the explanation according to the Sautrāntika school, where the abode of consciousness refers to the uninterrupted continuity of consciousness. Consciousness
