Ro! That which appears as a sentient being is the sound of verbal expression. The statement "others are not shown as sentient beings" means that showing as a sentient being, that is, showing as a sentient being, through the sound of verbal expression, one can know "this is a sentient being." Other sounds besides the sound of verbal expression, even the sound of a hand, are not shown as sentient beings, so what need is there to mention those born from the continuum of non-sentient beings? This will be explained in detail. Thus, that which arises from the cause of seized elements is both shown as a sentient being and not shown as a sentient being. Also, that which arises from the cause of unseized elements, such as the sound of emanation, the very nature of verbal expression, is shown as a sentient being. And the sound of the hand itself, and the sound of wind and forests, etc., are not shown as sentient beings, so there are four kinds of sound. Furthermore, there are eight kinds by the distinction of pleasant and unpleasant. Just as with a single atom of color, this is because sound is a form that takes external objects as its cause, so it is not characterized by its cause like the elements, but is thought of as being like an atom of color. Taste is sixfold, which is said in terms of the six basic categories, but the differences in the mixing of the six tastes with each other cause the kinds of taste to become very numerous. As it says in the medical text Caraka: From the combination of one, two, three, four, five, and six, sixty-three tastes are shown. Because of similar and dissimilar smells, the statement that a smell has a large or small component is a summary statement, and in this respect, smells are considered to be of two kinds. In the scriptures, it says that there are three kinds of smell: pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral. The statement that a neutral smell is the third kind is a summary statement. Others say that the term "neutral smell" is one of their own positions, and that the meaning is the same, only the words are slightly different. Coldness is what desires warmth, which is said in terms of existence, so whatever dharma desires warmth is cold.

It is said that it is form caused by something called "so-and-so." Even if summer cannot produce cold, it should be understood as merely cold because it is of the same kind as cold. The meaning of "because the result is established as the cause" is that hunger is the desire to eat, which is a dharma arising from the mind, and its cause, what can be touched by the body's senses in the stomach, is the form caused by something called hunger. For example, "The Buddhas are the source of happiness." etc., just as the appearance of the Buddha is said to be the cause of eminence and definite goodness, so it is called happiness, this is similar to that, and the same should be said for thirst. The meaning of "measuring for accumulated things" is considering that the heavy thing itself is very small. Here, clothes etc. used in form, because there are the dependent and the depended upon, are combined with the heavy thing, like a pot and a weight, this is inferred. In the phrase "there is benefit, yes," the word "yes" is to indicate the tenets of the Vaibhashikas, because their own tenets hold that only samadhi is beneficial, so what is the use of examining cold there? The meaning of "when its form is clearly distinguished" is when pointing to the characteristics of forms such as blue. The meaning of "ear consciousness etc. should also be understood in the same way" is that for the many forms of sound that have been spoken, sometimes one thing produces ear consciousness, that is, when its form is clearly distinguished. Sometimes it is multiple things, that is, when there is no distinction, such as listening to the collection of drum sounds, huge sounds, and the essence of many pleasant sounds. Similarly, nose consciousness and tongue consciousness should also be combined with their respective objects. If there are very many, how is it that the four great elements are also produced by one softness etc. and five tangibles? Sometimes one thing arises, that is, when its form is clearly distinguished. Sometimes it arises from two to five things, that is, when there is no distinction.
