How are these extensively explained? In the sutra, the monks say that these three are the characteristics of conditioned phenomena. Which three? Monks, conditioned phenomena have arising, which is also manifest; they have cessation, which is also manifest; and they have change while abiding, which is also manifest. This is what the sutra says. Some say that a fourth should also be mentioned there, which is the assertion of the Vaibhashikas. Then, what is meant by 'change while abiding'? The opponent thinks that since the word 'abiding' is mentioned here, why is it not said 'how it abides'? This seems to be what they intend to express. 'This is another name for aging,' meaning that changing from the state of abiding to another state is 'change while abiding,' which indicates aging. For example, 'appearance' is another name for 'arising,' and 'impermanence' itself is 'cessation.' Similarly, 'change while abiding' is another name for 'aging.' Furthermore, why did the Bhagavan only mention three characteristics when there are four? Therefore, 'which dharmas' are extensively explained. In order to make the disciplinarians weary, only arising, aging, and impermanence are said to be the characteristics of dharmas. What is taught in the sutra is intentional, while what is taught in the Abhidharma is from the aspect of characteristics. 'Aging and impermanence themselves, from the present arising to the past,' this is said in conjunction with the context, meaning 'to conceal.' Aging and impermanence themselves conceal from the time of present arising. Why? Because they weaken and destroy. Joy weakens, while impermanence itself destroys. Only impermanence itself conceals the dharma from the time of present arising to the time of the past, but not aging. Does aging not merely weaken the dharma? Why is it said that aging and impermanence themselves conceal from the time of present arising? Therefore, it is said that weakening also conceals at that time, because without weakening, there is no passage of time, so joy is also considered to be concealed at that time. Unconditioned phenomena also...

The reason for saying "abiding in its own nature" is that there is an abiding that abides in its own nature. Because there is abiding, abiding is not defined as the nature of conditioned phenomena. Abiding is similar to the abiding of the distinctive nature of the state of unconditioned phenomena, therefore, the Buddha's intention is to avoid the unconditioned from becoming conditioned, so he did not say it was a nature. Others think that the sutras also speak of abiding, saying: aging and abiding are combined, and abiding and change are abiding change itself, which is said in summary, but not separately. Why? Because if it is said that these three are the nature of conditioned phenomena, it will become contradictory. These are explained in detail in "among these, this is the basis of arising." "These among" refers to among arising and so on. "This" refers to abiding. "The basis of arising" is the place of arising, meaning that by means of it, the Dharma is able to abide. Therefore, in order not to be attached to abiding, the Blessed One showed abiding as being like wealth, together with the inauspicious black woman. Some explain it this way: do not be attached to this, just as the auspicious woman and the inauspicious woman are related to impermanence. Others say: do not be attached to this, just as the auspicious woman and the inauspicious woman are related to aging, aging is the nature of change, and is united with aging, but not with impermanence. Therefore, the nature of conditioned phenomena is only four, which is a summary of the two views. If there are other arisings and so on, if through arising, some conditioned phenomena will arise, then arising is also a conditioned phenomenon. Therefore, for it, there will also be other arisings, because it is contradictory for oneself to act on oneself, and in the conclusion it says: all are the nature of conditioned phenomena. Similarly, aging and so on are also like that.
