So, what is this so-called "continuum"? Is it like the Samkhya school's view that when a substance exists, if another dharma disappears, another dharma arises, is the continuum also something that exists and transforms into something else? The answer is: No. Then what is it? It is the formations of the three times—past, present, and future—that become cause and effect, that is, cause and effect are cause and effect. The so-called cause and effect is that which arises without interruption. For the formations of the three times, they are designated as the continuum. From where is it spoken? Where does it appear extensively, from which sutra is it spoken? What is it? The answer is: Having attachment, that is, the four mindfulnesses, such as body mindfulness, etc., do not possess and are not suitable for the conditions for arising. If attainment is a seed, because the seed is constantly present, the mindfulness will not arise, is that so? If according to your view, even if it is attained, it will not arise, so this is the same. Therefore, there, having is attachment, accepting or not abandoning, both of these can be said. Accepting is allowing. Not abandoning is completely destroying. That cessation, with the imputed dharma, that cessation is not possessed. In all cases, it is an imputed dharma, not a dharma of substance. Whether it is said to be the cause of arising, whether it is said to be the cause of designation, whether it is said to be the difference of the basis, whether it is said to be accepting or not abandoning, in all cases, that is, in all situations, it is an imputed dharma. Imputed, conventional, and nominal dharmas are imputed dharmas. Not a dharma of substance is not the nature of a substantially existing dharma. This is its definition. Or, it is both a substance and a dharma, so it is a dharma of substance. Like form and so on, it is not a dharma of its own characteristic that exists. This is its definition. The scholar Dusang says that attainment is the sign of knowing "this has this," and it is the cause of not wasting the attained dharma. The sign of knowing "this has this" is not established, because if there is a difference in the basis, then it will be known.

Thus it is said. Furthermore, if it is thought that obtaining the Dharma is obtaining the cause of not wasting, then if what is obtained is not completely abandoned, it will not be completely abandoned. Therefore, this does not become a valid reason. The characteristic of the seed as a difference in potential, as established by the teacher, who brings it forth? Is this difference in potential something other than the mind, or is it not something other? If it is said to be something other, then it is established that there is "obtaining," and it is merely arguing about names. If it is said to be not something other, then it is admitted that non-virtue is also a seed of virtue, and virtue is also admitted to be a seed of non-virtue. Who would understand that heat and fire are not different entities, and that only heat burns, not fire? The seed of virtue is also in the mind of non-virtue or the unspecified, and likewise, the seed of non-virtue is also in the mind of virtue or the unspecified. Similarly, the seed of the unspecified is also in virtue and non-virtue, and the seed of the contaminated is also in the uncontaminated, and the seed of the uncontaminated is also in the contaminated, so it would follow that there would be the fault of mixing, they say. To this I should say that if they are not different entities, there would be the fault of mixing. The seed is not something other than the mind, nor is it not something other, because it is the nature of being dependently designated. If it is said that there is no other entity, there is no fault, because the arising of a virtuous mind plants a seed in the mind of one's own continuum, in accordance with one's own kind or another kind. From the difference of the cause, the difference of the result changes, so from that, that special mind arises, and that special mind is the ability that arises when the seed of virtue needs to function. Likewise, non-virtue also plants a seed in the mind of one's own continuum, in accordance with one's own kind or another kind, and from that, a special mind arises, and that ability arises when the seed of non-virtue needs to function. Similarly, the unspecified also
