Therefore, these occurrences are not contradictory. When, in the aggregate of mind and mental factors, the act of thinking predominates, then the mind is coarse. When the act of analysis predominates, then it is subtle. Just as the application of terms to the practice of desire and ignorance is done, although desire and ignorance arise simultaneously, depending on which of the two predominates in the action, it is named as practicing desire or practicing ignorance. Here too, it should be viewed similarly. Regarding this, I think it is possible that certain aggregates predominate in certain dharmas, but since the characteristics of these two are not distinguished, I would say this is "Kina". If it is said that the characteristics of thinking and analysis are not said to be the coarse and subtle mind? If it is said so, that is true, but because each category has coarse and subtle, their characteristics should not be coarse and subtle. It is like what was said earlier, so I am not satisfied with this. Others say that thinking and analysis cannot arise simultaneously in one mind. This is the tenet of the masters, and for this tenet, there will be no fault as mentioned earlier. If it is said, what is the difference between these two phenomena that arise in different ways? Regarding this, previous masters said: What is thinking? Relying on attention or wisdom, in uncertain or certain situations, it is to comprehensively seek the expression of mind, and that is the coarse mind. What is analysis? Relying on attention or wisdom, in uncertain or certain situations, it is to separately discern the expression of mind, and that is the subtle mind. It is explained in this way that this view holds that thinking and analysis are the same in essence, and the essence of aggregation arises in different ways, and they are distinguished only by the form of comprehensively seeking and separately discerning. Here, some give an example: For example, there are many bottles, and one strikes them with the palm of the hand, saying, "Which one is hard and which one is empty inside?" That is thinking.

Within (meditation), that which holds onto "how much is beneficial" or clings to "is essence" is 'vicāra'. Now, how is it explained that the first dhyāna has five branches? The detailed explanation is: Separated from desires, separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, possessing vitarka and vicāra, joy and happiness arising from separation, the first dhyāna is perfected and dwells. In this sutra, it is said to have five branches, what is that like? This is what is being asked. From the perspective of the ground, it is explained as five branches, but not from the perspective of a moment. This is because the ground of the first dhyāna sometimes possesses vitarka and sometimes possesses vicāra. Therefore, from the perspective of the continuum, it is explained as five branches, but not from the perspective of a moment, so there is no fault. From comparing with others, after fully examining some difference, the meaning is: from comparing with others, after fully examining a real or unreal difference, thinking "I am a hero, possessing wealth, possessing discipline, wisdom is complete," this inner pride is māna, a mental factor. The mind is completely attached. The word "ni" should be understood as being used to distinguish, or as being used in other sequences. Therefore, it is said in detail that "pride is attachment to one's own dharmas." The meaning of "the mind is completely attached" is: because of attachment to one's own dharmas, such as appearance and bravery, the mind is completely attached and completely closed, this is pride of the same kind as desire. The teacher Subduer says: attachment to one's own dharmas, the mind is proud, completely attached and retreating from virtuous dharmas, that is pride. Pride also arises from desire, it is a kind of difference of universal joy, meaning that mental joy is considered a defilement. The Vaibhāṣikas do not accept this, because mental happiness exists between the second dhyāna, while pride is "lethargy and agitation pride in the three realms" appears like this, so in the three
