What are they? In summary, sleep and pride, which are abandoned by seeing, are the sphere of mind and consciousness. All that is abandoned by seeing is the sphere of mind. Also, sleep and pride, which are abandoned by cultivation, are all the sphere of mind. The afflictions close at hand are also independent. All those afflictions close at hand, although they are also abandoned by cultivation, should be regarded as the sphere of mind. Others are the support of the six consciousnesses. Other afflictions and afflictions close at hand should be known as the sphere of the six consciousnesses. What else is there? Attachment, anger, ignorance, and the afflictions close at hand that correspond to them, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, lethargy, excitement, etc., which are abandoned by cultivation, are all mentioned in the many spheres of affliction. Among the five faculties such as happiness, which faculties correspond to afflictions or afflictions close at hand? Happiness and so on correspond to desire. Desire corresponds to happiness and joy. Anger is the opposite. It means corresponding to suffering and unhappiness. Ignorance corresponds to everything. Because ignorance corresponds to all afflictions, it corresponds to all five faculties. Wrong view corresponds to joy and suffering. False views correspond to joy, suffering, and unhappiness, because they correspond to virtuous and non-virtuous actions respectively. Unhappiness corresponds to doubt. When doubt arises, unhappiness arises in order to seek a definite meaning. Others correspond to joy. Other secondary afflictions correspond to joy. What else is there? The four views and pride, because they are aspects of joy. What are the secondary afflictions that have been said to correspond to? It is said: born of desire. After temporarily explaining the correspondence separately and definitely, in general, equanimity and everything. All these secondary afflictions correspond to equanimity.

It is also similar to the mind faculty. When the continuum of afflictions is cut off, it will definitely abide in the mind faculty of equanimity. How is it similar to the superiors? Answer: Each is the same as the ground of the superiors. The subtle parts of the upper grounds, in which grounds there are as many mind faculties as there are, are the same as their respective mind faculties. In those grounds, as appropriate, the four aggregates of consciousness are the same as the four aggregates of consciousness. The ground of mind is the same as the ground of mind. It has already been said that afflictions are the same as the mind faculty. The near afflictions are: displeasure and regret, jealousy, anger and harm, resentment and concealment, should be added as "the same." The aspect of sorrow, those are because they are the ground of mind. Stinginess is the opposite. It is called being the same as pleasantness, because it is the aspect of joy born from the cause of desire. Flattery, deceit, pride, concealment, sleep, both are the same as pleasantness and unpleasantness, sometimes deceiving others with pleasantness, sometimes deceiving with unpleasantness, even until sleep is the same. Those and pride, in the third dhyana are the same as happiness, below are the same as pleasantness, above are the same as equanimity, like this, equanimity is all-pervasive. Everything is the same as equanimity, that is like ignorance, it is prevented everywhere. The other four and the five, shamelessness and lack of shame, lethargy and agitation, the four pervasive entanglements, because they are the great ground of unwholesomeness, and are the great ground of afflictions, so they are also the same as all five mind faculties. In the sutra, it is said that the desire for lust and hatred, as well as lethargy and sleep, agitation and regret, doubt and the five obscurations, for these, is it taking the lethargy and agitation of the three realms, or is it only taking what is associated with desire?

In Tibetan, what is not mixed with the aggregates of non-virtue is this: it is said that there are five obscurations, because only non-virtue arises, so the obscuration of the desire realm is not in other realms. Why are dullness and sleep both said to be one obscuration, and excitement and regret both said to be one? Because they are dissimilar, and their food and function are the same. Two are one. Because one of the two is one, it is one. Dissimilar, antidote, and non-food are the same meaning. The sutra says that the food of dullness and sleep is the same, and the non-food is also the same. What is the food of the obscuration of dullness and sleep? It is five things: dullness, displeasure, dullness of action, the same food, and discouragement. What is the non-food of the obscuration of dullness and sleep? It is attending to light. The function of these two is also the same, and these two also discourage the mind. Excitement and regret are also one. What is the food of excitement and regret? It is four things: discrimination of relatives, discrimination of people in a place, discrimination of immortality, friendship, laughter, play, joy, and recollection of enjoyment. What is the non-food of the obscuration of excitement and regret? It is calm abiding. The function of these two is also the same, and these two do not pacify the mind, so because they are dissimilar, and their food and function are the same, they are said to be one. When are all afflictions obscurations? Why are they said to be five obscurations? Because they obstruct the aggregates and cause doubt, they are five obscurations. Desire and hatred obstruct the aggregate of morality. Dullness and sleep obstruct the aggregate of wisdom. Excitement and regret obstruct the aggregate of concentration. Without concentration and wisdom, one will doubt the truth, so they are said to be five obscurations. This should be analyzed: all that pervades the unequal realms, and the tainted objects to be abandoned by not abandoning cessation and the path.
