I and, the wise Great Giving abides in opposition, and the mind takes hold of it completely. Agitation is the mind not being tranquil. Regret and torpor have already been explained. Sleep is the mind being manifestly withdrawn, unable to properly hold the body. That and regret are entirely afflicted by pervasive entanglement. Anger is harming sentient beings and non-sentient beings, except for the intention to harm and various forms of injury. Concealment is hiding faults. From those pervasive entanglements, desire gives rise to: shamelessness, agitation, and miserliness. These three near afflictions are of the same origin as desire. Concealment is disputed. Some say it is of the same origin as existence. Others say it is of the same origin as ignorance. Others say it is both, because it is successively of those who know and those who do not know. From ignorance arise: torpor, sleep, and shamelessness. These three are of the same origin as ignorance. From doubt arise: regret, anger, and jealousy. They arise from the cause of anger. 'Pervasive arousal of anger' is a synonymous term. Thus, these ten near afflictions are of the same origin as afflictions. Furthermore, there are six stains of affliction, namely: deceit, cunning, pride, likewise resentment, holding grudges, and harm. Among them, deceit is deceiving others. Cunning is a deceitful mind, because it does not reveal things as they truly are, or entrusts words to the wind, or speaks unclearly. Pride has already been shown earlier. Resentment is holding onto things that have faults, because one does not listen to the teachings of others. Holding grudges is repeatedly doing things that cause pervasive harm. Harm is various forms of injury, because one harms others with weapons and harsh words. These six stains of affliction also arise from desire, deceit, pride, holding grudges, and harm arise from anger. Resentment arises from views and holding to what is supreme. Cunning is pervasively aroused by views. What is deceitful? An evil view? Thus, it arises from the verses. Those.

What, then, should be abandoned? For the moment, let us speak of the ten universally auspicious ones. Among them, lack of shame, lack of embarrassment, dullness, sleep, and agitation, these five dharmas, because they possess both aspects of affliction, are to be abandoned by seeing, to be abandoned by cultivation, and both. Whatever is similar to what is to be abandoned by seeing is to be abandoned by seeing. Other than that, it is to be abandoned by cultivation. Other than those, the near afflictions, gathered by universal entanglement, jealousy, stinginess, regret, anger, concealment, these five near afflictions, because they are similar only to ignorance, are only to be abandoned by cultivation, and are autonomous. Just as jealousy and the other five near afflictions are to be abandoned by cultivation and are also autonomous, so too are the stains. The six stains of affliction are also the same. Again, the near afflictions that have been spoken of are unwholesome in the desire realm. In the desire realm, they are unwholesome. Among them, dullness, agitation, and sleep are unwholesome and indeterminate. Those that are similar to the view of the aggregates and the view of extremes are indeterminate. Above that is indeterminate. Above the desire realm, how do the near afflictions exist? They are indeterminate. Again, in which bodies should it be known that these exist? In the desire realm and the first dhyana, deceit and deception. These two exist in the desire realm and the first dhyana. How does deception exist in the realm of Brahma? In order to deceive Brahma. Brahma there shows himself as a perverted self, thus deceiving the venerable Aśvajit. Deceit has already been spoken of. Incidentally, what has come has already been spoken of. Dullness, agitation, and pride are of the three realms. These three are of the three realms. The others arise from the desire realm. Having abandoned five from the sixteen, eleven near afflictions operate in the desire realm. Afflictions and near afflictions have already been spoken of. Again, among these, how many are the bases of mind? The bases of the six consciousnesses are
