Furthermore, noble auditory disciples, endowed with hearing, will also observe past forms. If future forms did not exist, then noble auditory disciples, endowed with hearing, would not develop intense joy in future forms. Why would (the Buddha) extensively proclaim the so-called "future forms" and so on? Second, because consciousness arises in dependence on two things. What are these two? Namely, from the eye and form, to what is said between the mind and phenomena. If there were no objects of the past and future, then the consciousnesses that cognize them would not arise in dependence on two things. For the moment, according to the scriptures, if the past and future exist, then that is how it is. According to reasoning as well, it is because objects exist. If objects exist, consciousness will arise; if they do not exist, it will not. If the past and future did not exist, then the consciousnesses that cognize them would not arise. Therefore, because there is no object, consciousness itself will not arise either. Third, because of the result. If the past did not exist, then how would the fruits of virtuous and non-virtuous actions in the next life arise? When the fruits arise, there is no cause for present maturation. Therefore, the Vaibhashikas say that the past, future, and present all exist. If one says "Sarvastivada," then one must undoubtedly acknowledge this, namely: because they say "exists," they are called "Sarvastivada." Those who say that the past, future, present, and non-temporal (unconditioned dharmas) all exist are the Sarvastivadins. And those who distinguish and say that the past that has already occurred but has not yet produced results exists, and that the future and the past that has already produced results do not exist, are the Vibhajyavadins. So, who are the proponents of "Sarvastivada"? Those who say, "Four kinds, things and characteristics, as well as states, each transform." Namely, things transform into other things, characteristics transform into other characteristics, states transform into other states, and others transform into others. Among these, things transforming into other things refers to when those dharmas enter into time, things transform into other things.

The substance of a thing does not transform into something else. There, it will be explained thus: When a dharma transitions from the future time to the present time, it abandons the future object, and when the present state transitions to the past, it also abandons the present object, but not the substance of the thing itself. For example, when a golden vessel is destroyed and made into something else, the shape changes, but the color does not change. This is what they say. The characteristic transforming into another refers to when dharmas enter various times, the past possesses the characteristic of the past, but it is not without the characteristics of the future and the present. Similarly, it also applies to the future and the present. For example, when a man develops attachment to one woman, it is not that he has no attachment to other women. This is what they say. The state transforming into another refers to when dharmas enter various times, transforming from one state to another, showing different states, but not different things. For example, on a single die, even if only one mark is made, it is one; if ten marks are made, it is ten; if a hundred marks are made, it is a hundred; if a thousand marks are made, it is a thousand. This is what they say. Transforming into another refers to when dharmas enter various times, relative to the previous and the subsequent, they are called others. For example, a woman can be called both mother and daughter. This is what they say. Thus, these four views are the assertions of the Sarvastivadins. Among these views, the third is the best, that is, the view that the state transforms into another is the best. Why? Because in the time of distinction, when a dharma does not act, it is the future; when it acts, it is the present; when it has acted and ceased, it is the past. Those who give examples here exist to refute. If a dharma exists by its own nature, it should always act. It becomes an obstacle. Because sometimes it acts, and sometimes it does not act, this is the past, future, and present. How is that so?
