That which is called "these" indicates that they are unpredicted, which means that existence, views, arrogance, and ignorance are unpredicted. Why are only these considered the root of the unpredicted? Because ignorance leads to three types of meditative states. These three meditative states are: desire, views, and arrogance are superior meditators, and these also change under the influence of ignorance. The sutra says: Are the fourteen unpredicted things that are spoken of unpredicted? The answer is no. Then what are they like? They are spoken of as unpredicted from questions that should be set aside. There are four types of questions: one that should be predicted directly, one that should be predicted after being explained separately, one that should be predicted after being asked back, and one that should be set aside. Accordingly, they are: predicting directly and separately, asking back and setting aside. Death, birth, and goodness, as well as self, other, and so on, should be understood as such. If asked, "Do all sentient beings die?" the answer should be, "They die," which is a direct prediction. If asked, "Do all sentient beings take birth?" the answer should be, "Those with afflictions will be born, but those without afflictions will not," which is predicting after explaining separately. If asked, "Is this person good or bad?" the answer should be, "In relation to what are you asking?" which is predicting after asking back. If it is said, "In relation to the gods," the answer should be, "They are bad," which is a prediction. If it is said, "In relation to the lower realms," the answer should be, "They are good," which is a prediction. If it is said, "Are sentient beings different from the aggregates or not different?" Because sentient beings have no substance, it should be set aside, like asking whether a widow's son is blue or white. How is this unpredicted? Because it is unpredicted in itself, it is likewise unpredicted. Whatever subtle aspect of a person increases in whatever object, that person possesses that thing. Here, it should be stated from "What did the past ones possess?" up to "What do the present ones possess?" In short, there are two types of afflictions: the afflictions of one's own nature are desire, anger, and arrogance. The general afflictions

The hindrances are views, doubt, and ignorance. Among these, for the time being, past and present things, for the attachment, anger, and pride that have arisen and not been abandoned, will correspond to those things and the real things. The attachment, anger, and pride that arise from any thing in the past and present, and have not abandoned those, will correspond to the thing, because those are the afflictions of self-nature, so they do not necessarily arise from everything, nor do they arise in everything. With mind and future, universally, connect "for whom has not been abandoned" to it. The attachment, anger, and pride of the mind-ground, those themselves of the future, then correspond to all things of the three times, because the object of mind is the three times. By others in their own time, other future attachment and anger, then only correspond to future things. Furthermore, what are the others? That is, those five aggregates of attachment and anger, for the dharma of arising, it is like that. Those themselves, for all of the unborn, the five aggregates for the dharma of the unborn, then correspond to all things of the three times. All the rest correspond to everything, what are the rest? That is, the views, doubt, and ignorance of the three times, because they are common afflictions, so all of those also correspond to all things, as long as they are not abandoned. This is in terms of what is called "as long as they are not abandoned." Are the past and future real or unreal? If they are real, then because they exist in all times, conditioned phenomena will become permanent. If they are unreal, then how can they correspond to or be separated from them? The Particularists, because they have the nature of conditioned phenomena, so conditioned phenomena are permanent, vowing that all conditioned phenomena exist in all times, this is clearly admitted. Why? Because it was said. The Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, if the past form did not exist, then the noble hearer who is endowed with hearing would not look at the past form, then because the past form exists, so
