The subtle defilements to be abandoned are three: wrong view, doubt, and ignorance, as well as those that are concordant and discordant with them. What is to be abandoned by the path of seeing is these themselves. Thus, these six are focused on the unpolluted. The remainder are established as being focused on the polluted. Furthermore: Cessation is its own ground, the paths of the six and nine grounds, that is the sphere of their activity, the path is the cause of each other. The wrong views, etc., that are focused on cessation are focused on the cessation of their own ground. Those that operate in the desire realm are focused on the desire realm itself, and even up to the peak of existence are focused on the peak of existence itself. Those that are focused on operating in the desire realm are the paths of the Dharma-knowing aspect of the six grounds, as well as all the antidotes to form and formlessness. The eight that operate in form and formlessness are also focused on all the paths of the subsequent-knowing aspect of the nine grounds. Because the paths are the cause of each other. Furthermore, why are desire, anger, pride, holding views as supreme, and holding ethics and vows as supreme not considered to be focused on the unpolluted? Desire is not, because it is to be abandoned. Desire is to be abandoned, and if it were focused on the unpolluted, then like the desire for virtuous things, it would not be something to be abandoned. There is no hatred because there is no harm. Anger arises towards harmful things, but cessation and the path are not like that. Because of being peaceful, pure, and becoming supreme, it is not pride or holding as supreme. The two, cessation and the path, are peaceful, so it is not appropriate to be filled with them, and the meaning of truth is pure, so holding them as true is also not holding ethics and vows as supreme. Holding what is inferior as supreme is holding views as supreme, but these two are also supreme, so it is not reasonable that they are focused on the unpolluted. Of these ninety-eight subtle defilements, how many will expand from the perspective of the object of focus?

If asked, what is it? The subtle accompanying increasers, through the door of the object of focus, their own ground, will increase in all places. Not the accompanying ones, in their own category. Those subtle ones that accompany and increase will increase through the door of the object of focus in all five aspects of their own ground. Those that do not accompany, even if they are pure themselves, will only increase through the door of the object of focus in their own category, not in others. For example, those to be abandoned by seeing suffering will only increase in the category of those to be abandoned by seeing suffering. Up to those to be abandoned by meditation, they will only increase in the category of those to be abandoned by meditation, not in others. After stating it generally, it is indicated through the object of focus, not the realm of the undefiled higher. The subtle increasers that focus on the undefiled do not increase through the door of the object of focus, nor do they focus on the higher ground. Why? Because the object of focus for that is not possessed, because it is an antidote. Whatever object is possessed by the view of self and the view of existence, other subtle increasers can also increase there. For example, like dust accumulating on damp cloth. The undefiled is not like that, it is higher, it is not like that, therefore those that focus on it do not increase in those. Nirvana and the path are antidotes to the afflictions that focus on them, and the higher is also the antidote to the lower. Therefore, they also cannot find a place in those, just as feet cannot find a place on a heated stone slab. What increases through the door of the object of focus, those have been stated. Whatever is in accordance with what, there, through the door of accordance. Increase, should be connected in this way. Whatever subtle increaser is in accordance with what dharma, there it will increase through the door of accordance. The word "is" is to distinguish "until it is not abandoned." Among those ninety-eight subtle increasers, how many are unwholesome? How many are not indicated? All of the higher ones are not indicated.
