In short. Furthermore, in the Abhidharma, regarding those ten latent tendencies, the desire realm has thirty-six, the form realm has thirty-one, and the formless realm has thirty-one, which are also explained as ninety-eight in total. How is this understood? The latent tendencies of the three realms, in summary, are those to be abandoned by seeing and those to be abandoned by cultivation. Among these, let's say that the manifest tendencies to be abandoned by seeing in the desire realm are thirty-two. What are they? It is said in the sutra: "Those ten and seven, seven and eight, except for three and two views, in the suffering of desire, etc., are abandoned sequentially by seeing." Thus, among the ten latent tendencies that are spoken of, in the desire realm, all ten are abandoned by seeing the truth of suffering. Those to be abandoned by seeing the truth of origin are seven of them, and those to be abandoned by seeing the truth of cessation are also seven, namely, except for the view of the aggregates as real, the view of extremes, and the adherence to ethics and vows as supreme. Those to be abandoned by seeing the truth of the path are eight, namely, except for the view of the aggregates as real and the view of extremes. Therefore, the latent tendencies of the desire realm that are to be abandoned by seeing are those thirty-two, because they are abandoned merely by seeing the truths. Four are to be abandoned by cultivation, namely, desire, anger, ignorance, and pride. They are abandoned by cultivating the path after seeing the truths. Therefore, in this way, the view of the aggregates as real is one type, which is to be abandoned by seeing the truth of suffering. The view of extremes is also the same. Wrong view is of four types, which are to be abandoned by seeing the truth of suffering, origin, cessation, and path. Holding views as supreme and doubt are also the same. Adherence to ethics and vows as supreme is of two types, which are to be abandoned by seeing the truth of suffering and the truth of the path. Desire, anger, pride, and ignorance are of five types, which are to be abandoned by seeing the four truths and by cultivation. Therefore, these are twelve views. Doubt is four. Desire is

Five it is. Anger is also five. Pride is also five. Ignorance is also five. Thus, the subtle defilements in the desire realm are those thirty-six. Except for anger. Form realm. From those, anger is abandoned five by five respectively. The subtle defilements of the form realm are thirty-one. Just as the form realm is, similarly, the subtle defilements of the formless realm are also thirty-one. Thus, it is considered to be ninety-eight. Thus, the Abhidharma masters consider that from those six subtle defilements, with the distinctions of difference, aspect, and realm, there are sixty-eight. As such, are those subtle defilements that are said to be abandoned by seeing, abandoned only by seeing? It is said: No. Then how is it? Endurance born from the peak of existence. What is to be abandoned is itself abandoned by seeing. Whatever is born from the ground of the peak of existence, what is to be abandoned by the forbearance of subsequent knowledge, those are indeed what is to be abandoned by seeing. It is not what is to be abandoned by cultivation. Remaining births, by both seeing and cultivation. It should be added that what is to be abandoned by forbearance. The subtle defilements of the remaining grounds, what is to be abandoned by the forbearance of Dharma and subsequent knowledge, accordingly, for the noble ones, it is what is to be abandoned by seeing. For ordinary beings, it is what is to be abandoned by cultivation. Non-forbearance, what is to be abandoned by both cultivation. Whatever subtle defilements of all grounds are to be abandoned by knowledge, those are always to be abandoned by cultivation. The five views are shown from the perspective of names, but not from the perspective of their nature. So, what is their nature? Self and what is mine, permanence and annihilation, inferior and base seeing as superior, seeing what is not a cause as a path, those are the five views. Seeing as self or as what is mine is the view of the perishable aggregate. Because it decays, it is decaying. Because it is accumulated, it is an aggregate, meaning many. This is both decaying and an aggregate, therefore it is a decaying aggregate, that is, the five aggregates of close grasping. In order to eliminate the thought of permanence and the thought of wholeness, it is said thus. What precedes these is grasping these as self. Decaying aggregate.
