Due to the fault of degeneration, the fruit of that seed will not become small or without fruit. The merit arising from generosity, which arises as the basis of action, is complete. Now, the merit arising from discipline is to be spoken of. Regarding this, it is said: The immoral discipline is the form of non-virtue; abandoning it is discipline. The form of non-virtue is called immoral discipline; abandoning it is discipline. That discipline of abandoning is also of two kinds: that which abandons with manifestation (rnam par rig byed), and that which abandons without manifestation (rnam par rig byed ma yin pa). Discipline is not merely immoral discipline. For example, among the precepts established by the Buddha, some, although not immoral discipline by nature, the Buddha established precepts regarding untimely food, etc. Therefore, discipline is of two kinds of abandonment: if one transgresses after taking vows, immoral discipline will arise. Discipline has been briefly explained. It is purified by four qualities. That discipline is purified by four qualities; the opposite is not pure. What are the four qualities? The answer is: That discipline is not spoken of by cause, nor relied upon. For the time being, it is not disturbed by immoral discipline, nor is it disturbed by afflictions and near afflictions such as the continuity of immoral discipline, and because it relies on mindfulness, it also relies on the antidote to immoral discipline, relies on the characteristic of non-arising, and because it is completely dedicated to Nirvana, it also relies on peace. Others say there are five causes: the path of actual action is pure, the purity of proximity, it is not disturbed by discrimination, complete mindfulness, and it is completely dedicated to Nirvana. Some say that there are four kinds of discipline: the discipline of fear, which is guarding against the fear of non-benefit, unpleasantness, punishment, and evil destinies; the discipline of wishing for goodness, which is guarding while being attached to existence, enjoyment, and respect.

It is so. The discipline that accords with the limbs of enlightenment is that of those who seek liberation and have right views. The completely pure discipline is without outflows because it is without defilements. The discipline is complete. Meditation, the merit of equipoise. What is equipoise? It is what arises together with the nature of samadhi. Why is this called meditation? Because it meditates in the mind. That samadhi cultivates great virtue in the mind and makes the mind-stream its own nature with qualities, just as a flower soaks sesame seeds. If it is said that generosity leads to great enjoyment, then what do discipline and meditation lead to? For the sake of heaven and discipline, and for the sake of separation, meditation is the main thing. Generosity can also be transformed for the sake of heaven, but discipline is the main thing. Discipline can also be transformed for the sake of separation, but meditation is the main thing. It is said in the sutras that four people generate the merit of Brahma. What is the merit of Brahma? The Vaibhashikas say: It is only the measure of the karma that matures in its own nature. Former teachers explain: To abide in heaven for a kalpa is the four merits of Brahma. How much merit is required to abide in heaven for a kalpa? This is the merit of Brahma, because the lifespan of Brahma's attendants is a kalpa. It is also said in the verses of other schools: Generating the merit of Brahma, one abides in heaven for a kalpa. Material giving has been explained. Now the giving of Dharma will be explained. Therefore, it is said: Sutras, etc., without afflictions, truly showing the Dharma is giving. Without afflictions, truly showing as it is, is the giving of Dharma. Therefore, those who wrongly teach the Dharma, or who teach the Dharma with an afflicted mind, desiring gain, respect, and fame, their own merit
