That which is called "is" is the path of karma. That which is called "combination" is the action of body and speech for that purpose. That which is called "mind" is that which brings the path of karma to its ultimate conclusion. Thinking is, among those, one should do this and that kind of thing. This and that kind of thing will be done later, so thinking. Some, merely by completely summarizing with the ending, the karma becomes heavy, because the result of maturation necessarily exists. Some become heavy merely by the difference of the field. Some become heavy in that field itself, by the power of the basis, but not in other places. For example, like killing parents, taking what is not given, and so on, are not like that. Similarly, it should also be applied to others. It should be known that whoever's everything is the greatest, his karma is also extremely heavy. It should be known that whoever is the smallest, his karma is also very small. Regarding "karma done and accumulated," if asked: how is karma accumulated? It is by five causes: intentional and complete, without regret and without antidote, retinue and result of maturation, it is called accumulated karma. If asked: how is it intentional? It is done after deliberately thinking, it is not without prior thought, nor is it done accidentally. If asked: how is it complete? Some fall into the lower realms with one misdeed, some fall in between three, some fall into the lower realms with one path of karma, some fall in between ten, there, whoever falls there with how much, if that karma is not completed, then it is not accumulated. If it is completed, then it is accumulated. If asked: how is it without regret and without antidote? It is not regretting that karma, nor relying on an antidote. If asked: how is it from retinue? For the path of non-virtuous karma, it also relies on a non-virtuous retinue. If asked: how is it from the result of maturation? The result of maturation is completely certain. Similarly, it should also be applied to virtuous karma. Karma done other than that is not accumulated. It is said that giving alms to a stupa with attachment is for oneself. If there is no recipient there, how will it be?

If asked: How does it transform into merit? Merit is of two types: that which arises from the cause of complete giving is that which arises from complete giving itself. That which arises from the cause of complete enjoyment is that which arises from complete enjoyment itself. Regarding this, that which arises from the cause of giving to a stupa is merit. That which arises from the cause of enjoyment does not exist. Regarding this, if there is no receiver, how can it be merit? If it is received, it is merit, if not, it is not. Regarding this, what is the cause? Because no benefit is bestowed on anyone. This is not a cause, if only bestowing benefit on others transforms into merit, then immeasurable things like loving-kindness and cultivating correct views would not transform into merit. Therefore, stupas should also be considered merit. Like loving-kindness without a receiver. For example, loving-kindness and the like have no receiver or bestow benefit on others, but merit arises in one's own mind, similarly, even if a virtuous person has passed away, if one has faith in them, merit will arise in one's own mind. If that is the case, then giving alms would become meaningless? No, because the faith completely aroused by that action is the most excellent. For example, even if the enemy is dead, but the actions of body and speech completely aroused by the thought of killing the enemy, still act there with the concept of the enemy, then, what is not merit will arise very much, but not just the thought. Similarly, even if the teacher has passed away, if one performs the act of giving alms completely aroused by faith in them, then, merit will arise very much, but not just the thought. If giving alms to a good field results in a satisfactory fruit, then, would the fruit become unsatisfactory in a bad field? Because the fruit of the cause is not confused. Even a bad field has a satisfactory fruit. Even in a bad field, it is seen that the fruit arising from the seed is not confused. For example, from the seed of a grape arises a sweet fruit, and from the seed of a neem tree arises a bitter neem fruit. Similarly, even in a bad field, from the seed of giving with the extraordinary intention of participating in benefiting others, a satisfactory fruit will be accomplished, and not an unsatisfactory one.
