Therefore. It has already been explained from where non-restraint is obtained. Since it has not been explained how it is obtained, therefore it should be explained. Non-restraint restraint, is obtained from making a vow. Non-restraint is obtained through two causes. Those of the same kind are obtained from the application of killing. Those that are not of the same kind are obtained from vowing, "We too shall live by this livelihood." The remaining non-manifestations are not obtained through fields, receiving, and reverence. What are the remaining ones? They are called neither restraint nor non-restraint. They are obtained by the power of fields and so forth. Among them, the non-manifestation that arises merely from offering parks and so forth is a field that is in accordance with that. For example, from objects of merit arising from objects, or from vowing, "I will not eat until I have prostrated to the Buddha," and "I will always make offerings on holidays, half-months, or months," or from reverently performing actions that are in accordance with the non-manifestation that arises from virtue or non-virtue. How restraint and non-restraint are obtained has been explained. Now, restraint should be explained. In that, briefly, the abandonment of individual liberation discipline, abandoning the precepts, death, the arising of two genders, cutting off the root, and the passing of the night. Because it tames through that, it is taming, which is considered to be the discipline of individual liberation. Except for the discipline of close dwelling, it is abandoned by four causes: in the presence of someone who does not understand, abandoning the bases of learning from the depths of one's heart, or abandoning those of the same class, or the simultaneous arising of two genders, or cutting off the root of virtue. The discipline of close dwelling is those and the exhaustion of the night. Thus, if those are summarized, they become five causes for abandoning discipline. Why is it abandoned by those causes? Because it generates a non-manifestation that contradicts what was properly taken, and because of abandoning the body, and because of the decline of the basis, and because of the cutting off of the ground, and because it is only until that time. Some say it is from falling into sin.
